Maybe raves do have a side effect of distracting from sex. But still. I don’t know what modern hookup modes even are, and artistes do get bored at times while waiting for that paint to dry. Older drugs may have been more friendly to sex.

I’ve seen selfie videos of the guy, he’s self-absorbed in the extreme, just as his initial Facebook post after the fire would imply.

Technically, or so says our dear RC, raves tend to create disinterest in sex.

But still, is that the only thing that was going on, ever?

I daresay they probably weren’t teetotalers either.

I understand the lone “staircase” in this warehouse was made of stacked pallets.

What a nightmare.

And yeah, some laws in the city get enforced (don’t try to refuse to write happy words on a gay wedding cake) and some don’t (anything to do with homeless or squatting, which this is, a squatting and code issue).

Were I to try to put in a new bathroom in my flat, I imagine I’d pay a lot and go through a lot of red tape with building inspections and etc.

But these type things get a pass, just like the scores of homeless encampments which have people urinating/defecating/drug abusing/using questionable electrics and generators, and, obviously, obstructing the sidewalk in a major way.

But my toilet better be low flow!!!

No one cares if you just go in the street. That’s acceptable.

It’s not the event itself, it’s the effect of the electronic music combined with the drug. They’re pretty well tranced out, zombie dancing. There’s a style of electronica actually called Trance. It’s named that for a reason. Been there, used to go to raves when they first became popular in the US, late 80’s - early 90’s.

.
This stuff is fairly common in Oakland.

The Alameda County DA is far left oriented, and I don’t expect to see anything come out of this that changes the pattern.

They may throw the book at the land lord, but that will likely be the extent of it.

There was no prosecution when buses full of 1%ers jammed the Port of Oakland, and brought international commerce to a stop for about a week.

There was no prosecution when they camped in and defecated all over Frank Ogawa Plaza.

I guess if you can get enough people to unite in a rogue commune, you can get the nannies to go away. Actually, if someone in there DID refuse to inscribe a gay thing, they might not call in the fuzz anyhow... why throw stones in that glass house? But I find it hard to imagine anyone even had such principles.

I saw a lot shows in old warehouses, and played shows in old warehouses.

First thing you do is check the exits and make sure tgey are clear.

The Ghost Ship was a firetrap with blocked exits, a poorly constructed interior structure, stairs made of pallets, and extremely questionable wiring.

While we played some sketchy dives, way would we have played that joint.

The ghost ship was not a commune.

My guess is that they could handle it like they did electric bills. They took up collections, shook their green tambourines, whatever.

Once a month they would do the square thing and check the smoke detectors, fix the batteries, and make sure that the communal garden hose was working.

That is, until someone stole the batteries, used the smoke detectors as part of a sculpture, and tied artistic knots in the communal garden hose, I suppose!

I think people are reacting to the nudity.

Oddly enough a lot of people associate nakedness with sex.

Speaking more or less loosely about what went on.

Though if it wasn’t a commune, how DID the blooming thing get financed. Losing their existing power and water supplies would have been a bummer.

My kids were geniuses at not letting their parents know where they went and who they knew.

I used to go to raves occasionally in a place they called the Miracle House. It was in an abandoned, crumbling factory building. Most of the flooring was gone, you'd be dancing on dirt. There was no electricity, I assume they had a diesel generator outside, that or they'd hacked into a power line illegally. No bathrooms, not even portable. Hundreds and on occasion thousands. The only reason it wasn't a firetrap is that the building was largely concrete.

Part of the appeal is that it's in an improbable place, a place where such a thing shouldn't be. The light show, the music, in there? It seemed cool at the time, apparently still does to some.

Probably nobody was doing anything ravingly illegal or even collecting bribes. That’s a marginal part of town, lots of warehouses and substandard or at least very modest housing, so anything that went in there (and the artists did improve the neighborhood) was tolerated or at any rate given many warnings before enforcement took over, if it ever did. Mostly they seem to have ignored citations.

Many now high-end neighborhoods in NY - such as SOHO - started thus, so the authorities probably slightly looked the other way. However, the person who knew all about this was the owner of the property, who was a slumlord and should spend the rest of his days in jail.

I am so disgusted by some of the comments on FR. Okay, maybe these young people were nasty, gross, had tattoos, hated Trump (but they probably hated Hillary, too, and in any case, 80% of them didn’t even vote) but that doesn’t mean it’s okay for them to burn to death.

There’s a reason for building codes and it’s not just authoritarian intrusion.
