(CNN) - A budding musician. A truck-lover and bowling alley denizen. A singer whose adoring fans called him Nex Luguolo. A 17-year-old choir singer.
These are among the 36 people who lost their lives Friday night in a fire at an Oakland, California, warehouse where an electronic dance party was being held.

Authorities said they have identified at least 11 victims, but not all their names have been released.
Here's what we know so far about the victims:

Their families are entitled to learn why Oakland officials, well aware that this unsafe building was being used as a domicile and a site for large parties, was never vacated and sealed. Oakland officials did not enforce the law and people died. Begs the question who was making money and who was receiving “political donations”.
At least one was a kid still in school, and maybe other kids were there too.
Yeah dear. Live in that warehouse commune if that floats your artistic boat. Total immersion.
Unfortunately his last baptism there was in fire.
They need to show more pictures of the victims. Those pictures tell a story that the text is missing.
Begs for the question to be asked.
Not the same as the older “begs the question” which means a purported reasoned argument that uses the presumed answer as a premise, too.
Maybe this city was almost as bohemian as the warehouse.
Arrangements like this would have been common in the early 20th century, and fire codes forbidding it came later. That’s one part of history we would not want to revisit. Why do lefties, who would want to nanny everything else, not want a joint like this to at least have working fire protection even if nothing else was legal. Better for the art and artist to burn than to get soaked?
Modern day hippies living in a warehouse commune that hosts drug driven rave parties where highs and sex are free and rampant..........
The sprinklers would put out my BONG, mon. Ungood.
I’m sure the people who set up the impromptu memorial site were well intentioned, but a bunch of lit candles? Isn’t that a little inappropriate and a painful reminder to the families and friends of those who died? Why fire of all things?
Not a lot of thought goes into what happens here, apparently.
“It is someone elses fault. We were rounded up and forced to attend the rave party under threat of social ostracism”.
They’re not all druggies. Also, the long-standing drug of choice for those events might be touchy-feely, but sex is pretty well out of the question. I’m not in favor of ecstasy or MDMA, it has it’s own set of problems, even potentially life-threatening ones, and should not be taken, but please try to be factual.
It’s all fun and games until the commune burns down.
Dear Lord. I wouldn’t wish this on them. But things can come to such a juncture with certain people, that they essentially wish it on themselves.
Maybe it was the Lord’s final warning. “Folks, this is convincing performance art is it not? Do you want eternity to imitate it?”
People can so starve for love that this sounds convincing.
Seems kind of naive to me to expect this current generation to be so virtue minded and yet be in a place like this... but I could be a fuddy duddy, not in touch with the times. I would not expect sex raves, but I would very much expect both sex and raves at different times.
I’m sorry those folks lost their lives and the city bears some responsibility. But the adults there had to know those were unsafe digs so they were playing with their own lives. Being artists, I can imagine there were chemicals and flammables being stored unsafely in that space. And without electricians and maintenance staff to keep the wiring and facilities to code, it was just a matter of time. I can’t imagine a responsible parent letting their kid anywhere near such a place if they knew their kid was hanging around there.
Even in some kind of sane shape, if not “code.” Oh yeah, that wimpy cord will carry my 2000 watt ceramic kiln!
We’re as a group too old to understand how much things have changed and try to apply our own youthful experiences upon this situation. They don’t need a dance party for sex, that’s available 24/7 at the click of a button on their cell phones. Ecstasy is the favored drug at raves among those who partake of drugs. It renders sexual response highly unlikely, among males at least. Touchy-feely it is, though, so people see that and think it’s a prelude to sex. Normally, it would be.
The young man still in school, Draven McGill, was the son of an Alameda County Sheriff officer. They neglected to mention that in the story.
I’ve been following this one. Count stands at 36, but the recovery efforts had to be suspended because one of the walls was threatening to collapse. A planned power outage in the local area took place, so that a large crane could be brought in to deal with it, they wanted to be able to move the equipment without having to worry about it bumping into live wires everywhere.
Estimates on how much of the building has been covered vary widely.
I have heard that the city isn’t but the county is, proceeding with a criminal investigation.
Still nothing from Derick Ion Almena. His churlish Facebook post made it to almost 3000 replies last night, almost all of them of the ‘FU’ variety. The post was eventually pulled, and now his FB page has disappeared. His wife’s is still up, but isn’t getting ravaged. The FB point-of-presence for the establishment is still there. Every once in a while someone swoops in and drops a bomb.
