Wactor said the young bull elk might return to North Carolina if there are no females where it is in Pickens County.
Biologist said elk were eliminated from the southern Appalachian Mountains in the late 1700s due to over-hunting and loss of habitat. They said the species neared extinction across North American by 1900.
...it is pretty cool see the mountain elk come home after 300 years missing in action.

GLOBAL WARMING.... GLOBAL WARMING..... GLOBAL WARMING!
The wolves, cougar, and black bear are not far behind.
I wonder how long it will take for someone to blame this on global warming ...?
Awesome! Global warming helps animals! :)
Beat me by 34 seconds!
It's a damn, dumb elk...big whoop!! get the damn thing out of there before he hurts someone.
In Michigan we have even had a wolverine unconfirmed sighting, The first since 1917.
300 years....who are they kidding. So who reported one in 1716??
Here in VA black bears are pretty common now. I remember hearing on the radio when we first moved here 20 years ago the Virginia Beach Toll Road was blocked by a 300 lb black bear. I remember thinking, “WTH?”
Well, someone better shoot it quick before it escapes north! That’ll be something to brag about!

Elk are high mountain, cold climate creatures. If they are migrating south, it MUST be because of global warming! It just makes (no) sense.
Elk is delicious. Proper game management is the reason for their spread and return. 30 years from now, Elk will again be on the dinner table in SC. It’s good to see.
Elk may not be a big deal out west but on the East Coast it is a big deal. In fact, I remember reading about spotlight night hunting during the depression just about eliminated the White tail deer on the East Coast in the 40s.
I remember when they introduced the first 40 member Elk herd up in Maggie Valley somewhere around 2001 or 2002. My sister and BIL were living in Waynesville. They drove over and saw them one time. I don’t know what the size of the herd is now.
HILARIOUS!
You make a very good point!
You mean what I saw last year in a rural area of central Jersey might not have been just a big-@$$ deer? BTW, there are more deer here in suburban NJ now than there were in 1776! No predators remain, except the automobile.
It seems I remember reading about some novice hunter trying to check an elk through a check station here in VA some years back. IIRC, it was felt if he could not tell the difference between elk and deer he should not have been hunting.
I have to admit, after working my butt off for ten years trying to bag a wall hanger if I was in the woods and a nice Elk came along I don’t know if I could help myself. If I thought there was a even a CHANCE they might let me keep it I would sure be tempted.

They introduced these in Arkansas some years ago and now the valley is full of them.
Not far from my cousins house so when I go to visit him we always go see the elk.
