Bluebloods is pretty darn good...
Also, Arrested Development & Downton Abbey
Man in the High Castle was unreal. Just one of the finest sci-fi-ish shows ever made.
Versailles is a bit risque (understatement), but I like historic dramas, and these guys did a good job on the story
Stranger Things was also one of my favorites. They nailed the 80s so well, I felt like I was in my old neighborhood again. Still have to finish the season.
You beat me to mentioning “Doc Martin”.
Most every tv channel will have their shows online.
A no brainer would be pre-80s sitcoms.
I tried Friday Night Lights and could not get past episode 5.....very boring. I am currently watching Southland on Hulu.....GREAT show.
Lie to Me is an excellent suggestion.
Try anything from the Hallmark Channel. It’s all pretty light weight and easy to watch.
Give a look at acorn.tv
You can stream all the British shows, sure there are the “darker” shows, but most are present and past British series. We really enjoy the British series.
A lot of light fare, some fascinating documentaries, plus British spy and crime dramas.
Go to acorn.tv Click on browse the shows and all of their series will come up. You can try it for a month, free of charge. After your month, I believe it’s $4.95 per month. If you have Amazon Prime, you can also subscribe to the channel through them...it might be a buck cheaper that way.
What I like about British programing is a Season will often consist of 4 episodes. So Foyle’s War, for instance, has been on for 9 seasons, but each season is only 4 episodes, but each is 2 hours in length. Makes for enjoyable watching like you were sitting down to watch a movie.
One of my favorite lighter shows on the channel is a spoof of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, called Lost in Austen. Perfect entertainment if you’re an Austen fan.
When Calls the Heart is on Netflix. It is directed by Michael Landon Jr. and it shows.
Also Foyle’s War, wonderfully acted, amazingly produced.
Poldark is a new version released in 2015. Season 2 starts September 4 in UK. PBS has already committed to broadcast Season 2 (IIRC), but I am not sure whether it will broadcast simultaneously with the UK or later next year.
I have not seen the older version.
I have watched a few episodes of the British Shameless. I think I did watch episode 1 of the US version.
It is one of those shows I only watch occasionally.
McLeod’s Daughters is an Aussie series that went on for about 8 years. It was on Netflix and may still be.
The early series were pretty good, but it changed a lot over the years. By about season 5, for me, I lost interest.
It had many characters who later have shown up in many US cable TV series.

Youtube has a lot of full length movies and TV series.
They just do not have a good menuing system to locate them easily.
FYI
Loved Foyle’w War.
Also liked Home Fires about a group of Women’s Institute women in a small rural town at the onset of WWII.
Yes, the new Poldark is fantastic. Another older complete series in a similar vein is Lark Rise to Candleford.
I’m a fan of happy movies, some of my old favorites/recent discoveries:
Local Hero
King Ralph
City Island
FairyTale: A True Story
High Spirits
The Secret of Roan Inish
Best Man Down
Dear Frankie
Win Win
Stuck in Love
The Way Way Back
A Good Year
Trouble with the Curve
Thank you, I will look up MacLeod’s Daughters. This I the kind of thing my family enjoys!!
I’ve tried most of the streaming services available, and with any of them you need to wade through a lot of junk to find things worth your time. That said, we watch probably 95% Netfix content (via a Tivo Premier box) to 5% broadcast TV. There have been several fine BBC and other British productions we have gotten turned on to via Netflix. I’ll be first in line if someone offers an a la cart menu....
In case you haven’t seen it:

Hundreds of Public Domain old TV shows, with lots of episodes.
Scroll down past the Beverly Hillbillies article.
Also lots of great movies.
All legit, no hassles. It’s a great site.
