Quality Streaming Entertainment to watch?
Vanity | gopgal4life

I am a very long time lurker (typically in the articles section), FR feeds my soul, you could say, and always has. I rarely post, though. Don't judge me but I think my last comment was about Mitt running for prez back in 2011-ish. I am now firmly planted in the Trump camp and I have been since he announced in June 2015. Anyhoo, my post today is non-political. I decided to post today because I have been looking for online streaming entertainment to watch and I am dismayed at the popularity of all the Dark, Dark material that both Amazon and Netflix promote. I happen to not like dark entertainment...its is not something that I choose to unwind with. I do not knock it though! Please know that I have many (conservative) friends who do enjoy House of Cards, Man in the high castle etc. What I am wondering is, what about us folks who like to unwind with a feel good escape? Hubby and I have so far enjoyed "Hot in Cleveland" all seasons, "Gilmore Girls" also all seasons, the movie "Joy"... Feel good, funny stuff. We tried house of cards but we both were turned off at the episode with the offbeat threesome gender bending early on. We both feel that popular culture always has to go to a dark place. And in case you're wondering, my husband is a real guy, he's a builder, football fan, Trump fan. But we both enjoy lighter fare when we relax (we both had tears at the end of the movie Joy). So my question to my fellow freepers is: if u share the same taste in media, what can you recommend? I have Friday Night Lights tee'd up to start soon. Anyone else have some favorites in the vein I have described? Would love to hear suggestions! Bless you all and Trump 2016!

Orange is the New Black might work for you.

Also check out Grace and Frankie (Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin)

If you like historical costume fare I recommend Dr. Thorne the new Julian Fellows production (adapted from Trollope).

Its lighthearted, fast paced and the costumes and sets are great.

Why streaming?
Why not download and watch?
I don’t understand this love of streaming (except for live events). Please, someone explain it.

I download and watch. There’s a much better selection.

Corner Gas - YouTube (Canadian Sitcom)
“The sleepy Saskatchewan town of Dog River is in the middle of nowhere, and the residents like it that way just fine. Brent’s the guy who owns the only gas station around, and it happens to be attached to the only coffee shop. Police officers Davis and Karen are always on the prowl in this little nook of a prairie town.”

We’re enjoying “Heartland” on Netflix. Lots of horses.

“A multi-generational saga set in Alberta, Canada and centered on a family getting through life together in both happy and trying times.”

Hubby and I watched Dr. Thorne and enjoyed it a lot. More Trollope please, Mr. Fellows.

Not sure what you mean by Amazon Prime and Netflix being dark.

Netflix has tens of thousands of movies and tv series of all types. It is just a matter of taking some time to go through their listings.

AP has a good, increasing catalog, too.

I filter out nearly 90% of the junk entertainment, but I manage to keep 50 to 100 titles in both my AP and Netflix queues.

AP has an increasing number of British TV series.

I watch AP and Netflix 10 times more than I watch the 100 cable TV channels. Much of that has to do with the incessant commercials on TV, however.

instantwatcher.com allows you to search through the AP and Netflix catalogs by several selected criteria.

Poldark turned out to be a good series. I watched it on Amazon Prime, since I missed it on PBS.

Season 2 should be out soon and I think it will see a Season 3.

“Doc Martin” is good fun. We happily binge-watched all 7 or 8 seasons.

“Trials and tribulations of a socially challenged doctor in Cornwall, England.”

Is this a new series? I used to watch Poldark years ago on PBS.

Did you know the Shameless TV series is based on a British series of the same name? It’s significantly different but familiar and even funnier. I found it at DirecTV OnDemand.

“Lie to me” (Netflix)
“Heroes” (Netflix)
“Person of Interest” (Netflix)
“Leverage” 2 thumbs up (Netflix)
“Limitless” (Netflix)

Many others on Netflix... its not all dark.
Once u start watching stuff on Netflix, it starts tailoring itself to the kind of shows you like.

Yes, by all means, Heartland. It’s going on 9 or 10 seasons now.Your local library May have earlier seasons.
I also enjoyed Mister Selfridge on PBS. again, check your library. Mister Selfridge is about the man who started Selfridge’s department store in London in the early 1900s. Extremely well done semi historical drama.
Hope these suggestions help!!
