I just created this flowchart this morning. I was doing it as a joke, but...it isn't a joking matter.

I have thought about getting an extendable club. I’m fairly good with a bo staff....but can’t carry one of those with me on the side. LOL!

Yes, a knife is useful too. When I travel on airlines it is in my checked baggage, a Kershaw Leek assisted opening. Sometimes when my CCW license has reciprocity with the state I am travelling to I will check my pistol and a box of ammo. But the airline personnel are so uninformed it is a different hassle every time. Some just make up their own rules.

>>Helpful Tip #1: Never be unarmed.<<

Never leave home w/o it. I’m in my 50’s and have a good 3 minutes in me hand to hand and or a 40yrd dash. lol

You get two or three young twenty year old attackers, you better hope like heck you’re sporting a sidearm.

I watched “Robin Hood” back in the 50s or so. I remember seeing a lot of his men using staffs as weapons. Extremely cheap to make one too. In fact they are free.

To this day, and I am 70 now, I always carry a hickory staff around 7 feet long. This is when walking around the yard or nearby woods. I also keep a little .22 auto, either a Walther, FEG or Unique in my pocket. For concealed carry it is usually a Browning Hi-Power with a high capacity Mec-Gar magazine. Another spare mag too.

I have never used a staff in a fight so have no idea how effective they really can be. For some reason I really like the 7 foot length even tho a hiking stick is supposed to be shoulder height.

Yeah. Unfortunately, it can happen no matter what as I am pretty sure you know from reading your posts.. I know, I got jumped by a bunch of guys once, in a place I was completely unaware contained any danger for a twenty year old guy: The Navy base I was serving on.

It was very strange. Most of us have probably been beat up by a group of kids when we were kids, but to have it happen as a fully grown adult is a very different thing. There is an element of seriousness in it that is apart from the emotional seriousness you feel as a kid. As an adult you very much feel in a far greater danger.

I was in Cecil Field, walking back from the chow hall one night in between the barracks, and I felt a very sharp, hard kick in the ass. I whirled around to see a black guy grinning at me, and when I asked why he had kicked me, he said "I don't like your hat" (referring to my squadron hat for the VA-46 Clansmen)

I said, "That is too damn bad because you and I are going to have at it" and as I removed my glasses, four other black guys stepped around the corner. They encircled me as I stepped backwards, and not knowing what else to do, I assumed a martial arts pose hoping to buy a few seconds of time with their uncertainty. It worked as one of them said "Ah, he knows karate..." but that only lasted a few seconds until one lunged at me, I took a swing and down I went.

They were kicking the crap out of me, so I balled up and protected my face and vitals as best I could. They were trying to kick me in the nuts and the face, but fortunately for me, they smelled like they had been drinking, and landed more kicks on each other's legs and ankles than they did on me.

It seemed like it went on for five minutes, but I suppose it may have been only 15 or 30 seconds, at which point I saw an opening in their circle, bolted up and shot through it in one motion with all five of them running after me. I jumped on the concrete steps into the barracks, but knew if I grabbed the door to open it, they would be on me, so I grabbed a swab that was sitting in a bucket there and began jabbing and swinging it at them. I think I had been screaming "HELP!" or "HEY! SOMEONE HELP ME!" over and over again at the top of my lungs throughout the entire time, but I don't really remember doing it.

They finally melted away, and I went across the street to the hangar and found my boss, who was on duty, an AD1 running the night shift. When I told him what happened, he said: "Do you want to get together a bunch of our guys and go find them?"

That was who my AD1 was. A good man.

While I searched the face of every black guy I passed on that base for months, I simply could not remember the faces. That taught me a lesson as well. When your fight or flight kicks in, it alters the way your mind records it. Some things are recorded in your memory quite clearly, but there are other things that are completely unrecorded. It is as if your brain throws out everything that isn't going to help you survive, like the color of the buildings, or...the faces of the people attacking you.

But anyway, it was that simple willingness of one of my petty officers, a black man to take my side and stand with me against a bunch of thugs kept me on the straight an narrow, the way I had been raised.

Napoleon Dynamite was good with a bo staff too. Actually I had to look it up so figure out what it was.

One of those situations where there are no good options. They probably did not intend to kill you but I bet they planned to really work you over.

You did about as well as was possible.

Bear or wasp spray. Attacks can’t fight what they can’t see. Wasp spray also works very well. Lungs can fail if concentrated spray.

Good info.

In many cases, you can carry around a backpack with some type of shielding built-into it and also a small striking weapon like a collapsible police baton.

I can’t run so good so try to keep my Kahr handy.

After watching Monty python the 16 ton weight released on an attacker form 10 feet up is very effective.

I don’t think they meant to kill me, but...a kick to the head or the face was on my mind, not getting killed!!! I recall protecting my nuts effectively via body posture and motion, and my arms around my head and face.

LOL, Every time I wonder how much they wanted to ‘work me over”, I remember they chased me. That’s a bad sign.

I’d take the walking stick over the knife, much better reach.
