Antique SKS rifle used by Dallas Killer (No Ar-15 used)

Initial reports from Dallas described multiple snipers with AR-15s #weaponsofwar. The ongoing propaganda theme among the tabloids is that the AR-15 has become the weapon of choice for terrorists and mass shooters. It turns out that the terrorist in Dallas question used an antique, the SKS, (according to CBS News) but the facts never keep the press from a good propaganda theme.

The SKS was designed in the 40’s in Russia. It is such a basic rifle that it is legal in California with no modification. With its fixed ten round magazine, the SKS is everything that the gun haters in California say a rifle must be. It is not black, no pistol grip, no flash hider or folding stock. It even shoots a intermediate power cartridge, 7.63 X 39. It is used as a cheap hunting gun across the US. I am sure that at this moment, some law maker in California is writing new legislation to close the mad man with an antique rifle loophole.

The needs of combat - the need to shoot your fellow man like they are nothing - can give you single-mindedness. There is every indication he was avenging the dead and thought he was protecting the black community. This is not so very different from the basic forms of a soldier ethic - service, community, lay down your life.

That doesn’t need a call from anyone in the current administration to get the ball going.

Just because it has NONE of the evil features that make it an “assault rifle” didn’t stop See?BS! from calling it one.

At one time they were selling for as low as $69. I wish I had bought a case of them.

It was bad enough when all we had to screech about was the scary black rifle. Now we have a scary orange rifle to whimper and whine about too?

Two kinds of scary rifle? How will we ever keep all that straight!

I think the Soviets began designing the SKS right at the end of WWII. It was in part to be an urban warfare rifle. The Russians had some experience with urban warfare after being invaded and later doing house to house fighting to take over cities such as Berlin. The SKS is hardly a sniper rifle - not accurate enough.

Judging from the audio I heard, the Dallas shooter seemed to shoot a lot of rounds per victim. Did he need a lot of rounds because he did not hit his victim on the first round? Did he shoot his victims multiple times (maybe out of anger)? My impression is, he ambushed people so he was methodical in that sense, but then he shot rather wildly - not like a real marksman. I am sorry to sound so clinical about this horrible event. Maybe someone who knows what they are talking about could comment. It seems like every time a terrorist uses a rifle at more than point-blank range, the media and politicians call him a sniper and almost praise his skills.

Yes, you can get removable mags for the SKS. The SKS and AK-47 use completely different magazines. The SKS has a "duck bill" on it. You can get them in 10, 20, 30, or 40 round mags and even higher capacity drums.

I’m surprised he didn’t shoot the robot before it got too close.

There was no second shooter. You did not see that video.
Get with the program.

When they were first imported, you could get a Yugo SKS in practically new condition for $129. The ugly ones were selling for $89. I wish I had bought a dozen.

Friend of mine had a Chicom one years ago- shot it at the range with him a couple of times. The ergos are a little small for me, but it was a decent little rifle, and I know there are options for replacing the furniture.

The SKS is a basic semi-auto rifle, and there are no bells and whistles to it. It is fairly accurate, but with iron sights I’d not want to rely on it for any shots much past 150 yards. I’m a pretty good shot, but I know my limitations, and the limitations of my tools.
