Earlier today I visited one of my favorite bars (for a ginger ale). I live in a rust-belt state, a state that is considered Democrat, but one that went for Ronald Reagan back in the day.
The talk turned to politics. The folks present were all blue-color types. And they love Trump! There is also some sympathy for Sanders. They see him as a well-meaning dreamer. But there is zero support for Hillary, and zero support for Cruz. Zero. Nada. None.
But if it's Cruz, the situation changes. Nobody here knows who Cruz is. Nor do they care. He might as well be someone from Mars. If Cruz is the GOP nominee, he will lose my state, and he will lose the general election.
It will be Goldwater, Part II. The purists will be happy, but the nation will suffer because of it.
Obviously they’re not REAL conservatives, otherwise they would like Cruz.
I agree...lots of fence sitters at least consider Trump.
Bingo!
Trump supporters are Blue collar....
Whether Democrat or Republican.....
Whether White, Black, Yellow or Brown.....
There are more of them than anyone else....
Cruz....an attorney....very talented one but still an attorney....
No one likes attorneys.....
I will remind you of the old joke about the two men who encounter a bear. One bends down and tightens his shoe laces, and the other says "You can't outrun a bear".
The man tightening his shoe laces says "I don't have to outrun the bear. I only have to outrun you."
Cruz only has to outrun Hillary to win.
I personally don't think this will be very difficult for him to do.
Could be an interesting thread.
but the one true conservative party will be upheld if someone other than Trump is the nominee. the purity of the party must be preserved.
blech!
Cruz is toxic in the northeast. Between Catholics, Jews, mainline Protestants (what few remain) and non-religious voters there's a huge skepticism towards "Elmer Gantry" types. Not justifying this, it's religious prejudice. I'd love to put that aside to unite all conservatives. But it is what it is. Culturally Cruz is as alien as E.T., without the magic powers.
I was enjoying myself in a pub in Cork, Ireland when a group of American tourists came in. One of the Americans said, in a loud voice, I hear you Irish think you’re great drinkers. I will bet $5,000 that none of you here can drink 20 pints of Guinness in 30 minutes.”
>
> The bar was silent, but the American noticed one Irishman leaving. No one took up the bet. 40 minutes later, the Irishman who left returned and said, “Hey Yank, is yer bet still on” ?
> “Sure”, said the American, “20 pints in 30 minutes for a bet of $5,000”.
>
> Okay, replied the Irishman, so pour the pints and start the clock.
>
> It was very close but the last drop was consumed with only 2 seconds to spare.
>
> “OK, Yank, pay up”, said the Irishman.
>
> I’m happy to pay and here is your money, said the American. But tell me, when I first offered the wager, I saw you leave. Where did you go?
>
> Well sir, replied the Irishman, $5,000 is a lot of money to a man like me,so I went to the pub across the road to see if I could do it.
I’m in North Carolina. Trump won easily. But, in casual conversation, you won’t encounter very many Trump supporters at all. He’s frequently the topic of those conversations, but jokingly or negative.
Cruz, you hear nothing about, nada.
There are a surprising number of people who are at least somewhat positive about Sanders.
Nobody is talking about Hillary Clinton, however she also won this state handily.
I think a large number of people are downplaying their support for Trump or Clinton, as a result. I think they will be the nominees, barring any cuteness at the convention.
Cruz only has to outrun Hillary to win.
*************
Damn, I missed the GOP convention.... Did he win on the first ballot?
I never knew Ginger Ale drinkers had Favorite Bars.
I’ve never seen one....learn a new thing every day.... ;)
They just aren’t pure enough to see the face of God. We should all pray for their atonement.
But suppose it is Hillary vs. Cruz. Then the I'll-vote-as-my-grandfather-did routine would kick in. Hillary would win my state only because she has a (D) after her name.
Cruz is Goldwater, part II.
Yeah, sure, that's why in polling Trump is pretty much the most unpopular general election candidate since......well, polling began. In fact, I just saw today's latest poll where Trump's disapproval is now at 70% among a general election audience.
To believe this magical thinking that all these people are going to stop viewing Trump as poison and suddenly vote for him is just delusional.
Cruz doesn't poll great against Clinton or Sanders, but he at least keeps it close and gives us a chance. Trump just gets slaughtered. Not just beat, utterly destroyed. We have no chance with Trump at all, none.
This "I don't believe the polls" nonsense is very much like 2012 where people thought they could unskew polls, that they oversampled Democrats and were all wrong, etc, is exactly what this post is. It's a fantasy, someone living in alternate universe where all evidence can simply be ignored because it feels good to do so.
“They see him as a well-meaning dreamer
I think Cruz is here on a Dreamers visa...
:)
Oh really now.
