Ethan and Joel Coen's Hail, Caesar! grossed an underwhelming $4.3 million from 2,222 theaters Friday for a projected $11.6 million debut, the lowest nationwide start of the duo's directing career.
The news is even more grim for mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The movie may only debut to $5 million after earning $2 million on Friday from 2,931 theaters. That puts it behind the the third new movie daring to open on Super Bowl weekend, Nicholas Sparks' film adaptation The Choice, which took in $2.6 million from 2,631 theaters Friday for a projected $5.5 million debut.
Caesar — earning a withering C- CinemaScore from audiences — looks to come in No. 2 behind Kung Fu Panda 3, which is easily staying at No. 2 in its second outing. The animated film grossed $5.2 million from 3,982 locations Friday for a projected $20 million weekend.

My wife and I saw Hail Caesar yesterday and we loved it. We are old movie fans; there was a lot of material that people who are not familiar with old movies will not get.
The thing that we got the biggest kick out of... This was the first film ever to portray Communist Screen Writers as the villains. Even if this was done completely in jest... it was completely hilarious. They also made the movie star who fell for their idiotic diatribe look stupid; the big studio boss who slapped some sense back into him was portrayed as a hero. This was courageous as far as we are concerned and we loved it.
It is not surprising to us however that a lot of the humor seemed to be a little over the heads of the other people in the audience. It is also not surprising that a lot of people in Hollywood probably are not happy that one of their most sacred cows had holes blown through it... the rooting out of Hollywood communists.
Maybe it will be one of those word of mouth films. There have been a few that didn’t do well the first week but make up for it later. You never know. Thanks for letting us know about it. I would never have gone to see it at all without your summary of how good it is.
I read a review recently that he was a thug in real life.
His wife was having an affair with George Reeves when Reeves was killed, and the studio head set up the crime scene to look like suicide. The review said Reeves was probably shot by another woman he was having an affair with, but the studio head didn't want his wife brought into it.
Also set up the crime scene of Thelma Todd's death to look like suicide.
That's as far as I read, because I don't want to know any spoilers. One of my friends today said he saw it and thought it was bad. So that's a split vote so far.
I've seen five Coen Bros. movies and thought they all were good--O Brother and Lebowski are my faves--so I'm considering seeing this one.

It is no “O’ Brother Where Art Thou”, but we loved the old movie simulations. Our favorite actor was the guy who played the “Roy Rogers” like character.
The Coen brothers have had a dream career as filmmakers. They have pretty much made whatever film they wanted to at the time, despite the box office aftermath. BLOOD SIMPLE was their first (that I know of) and the first time I ever saw Francis McDormand.

Coen brother movies have never been box office smashes. I have enjoyed all their works starting way back when I found $1 “Barton Fink” in the VHS bargain bin at a local Blockbuster.

But I saw the name George Clooney in this new movie, so I’ll wait for Netflix to run it because it’s the curmudgeonly, Fred Mertz thing to do.
Well you might be somewhat pleased to know then that Scarlett Johansson plays a crude spoiled slut in the movie. Leftist George Clooney plays easily an manipulated idiot. Josh Brolin who has said that he is “very conservative” (for what that is worth in Hollywood) plays the strong, good leading character in the movie.
Surprisingly, Clooney isn’t given much screen time and he plays an easily manipulated idiot.
