  • U.S. Frees Last of the ‘Cuban Five,’ Part of a 1990s Spy Ring

MIAMI — They were known as the Cuban Five, members of a spy ring that descended on South Florida in the 1990s and infiltrated exile groups and military installations. They, along with other members of the ring, tried to make themselves indispensable to the exile groups whose secrets they stole. One of the operatives worked at the Naval Air Station in Key West, while another worked undercover in Tampa. “They were very good,” said Ramón Saúl Sánchez, the founder of the Movimiento Democracia, one of the exile organizations that was infiltrated. “When you trust somebody who you honestly believe is...

Sen. Marco Rubio is expressing concern and frustration with the Obama administration’s plans to restore relations with Cuba. “Today’s announcement initiating a dramatic change in U.S. policy toward Cuba is just the latest in a long line of failed attempts by President Obama to appease rogue regimes at all costs,” Rubio said in a statement Wednesday morning. The Florida lawmaker, whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba in the 1950s, said he was pleased that American Alan Gross have been freed from captivity in Cuba. But Rubio sounded a negative tone about what the U.S. gave up in order...

Activist turned terrorist Bill Ayers spoke with Iranian news agency Fars News last week, and called the United States a terrorist nation. Ayers is probably best known for his own terrorist activities with the Weather Underground during the 1960s and 1970s. When speaking about what constitutes terrorism and a terrorist state, Ayers said: “U.S. is indeed a terrorist nation.” Then he added: “It’s also the greatest purveyor of violence on earth over the past half century, and the foremost threat to world peace today.”

Preposterous Film Setup The entire process is preposterous from start to finish. France should get out of the movie-making business altogether. Instead it pays subsidies to films that the free market would never create, then to pay for that boondoggle it charges a tax on every ticket, every DVD, and every TV station. With all that graft, it's no wonder some actors are overpaid. Yet, it's highly likely that some are actually underpaid. The problem is government would have absolutely no way of knowing. With all the subsidies and taxes, it's impossible to know who is overpaid and who isn't....

I have been out of the country twice this year. The first time, I was in Mexico when protests broke out in Ferguson, Missouri, over the shooting death of Michael Brown; more recently, my two weeks in Argentina coincided with nationwide demonstrations against the lack of grand jury indictments in the cases of Brown and Eric Garner, the Staten Island police chokehold victim. Witnessing a nascent anti-police brutality movement from a distance has given me a different perspective on it, because the novelty of getting out in the streets in America and demanding justice stands in stark contrast to the...

Who is a hero? In today’s America, it is someone who chooses a military career, puts on a uniform, and prepares for war. Placing soldiers and veterans on this kind of pedestal is a relatively new phenomenon. Past generations of Americans saw soldiers as ordinary human beings. They were like the rest of us: big and small, smart and dumb, capable of good and bad choices. Now we pretend they are demi-gods. One reason Americans have come to view soldiers as our only protectors is that we have accepted the idea that our country is under permanent threat from fanatics...

A left-wing party with communist roots now controls the levers of government in the German state of Thuringia, marking the first time a political party closely linked to East Germany’s communist leadership has gained power since German reunification in 1990. The party is, appropriately enough, the Left Party, reports The Telegraph. This week, the state parliament in Thuringia narrowly voted to authorize a new coalition with the Left Party at the helm. The three-way coalition also includes the Green Party. The Left Party is viewed as the successor to the Socialist Unity Party which controlled East Germany when it was...

Everybody knows that Bernie Sanders, the grandfatherly Independent Senator from Vermont is a socialist. He’s made no secret of it over the years, proudly proclaiming to anyone who will listen. To most people it’s no big deal: “at least he’s honest,” they’ll chuckle. Most people seem to imagine that Grandpa Bernie’s socialism is benign, owing much more to Sweden than Cuba, much more to modern West Germany, than to the old German Democratic Republic. But is Bernie Sanders really being honest? What if he is actually more of a communist? A believer in class struggle? Of crushing the free enterprise...

Let’s stipulate a few things up front. I don’t think that the fatal police takedown of Eric Garner was justified, based on the offense that was in play. That offense was selling illegal cigarettes out of their manufacturer’s packaging — so-called “#8220;loosies.” Eric Garner did that, repeatedly, and had been arrested for it previously to the day that he died. However, my information in this case is incomplete, as is the video we have all seen, as is your information. As with Occupy, the vast majority of protesters preached peace, but a fringe group of people — some covering their faces with black bandannas — advocated violence and confrontations with police. Minder madness joins the surge of "background briefings" and the decline of access to decision-makers as evidence that the White House—and other big instititutions—are manipulating the press. It's that, but it's also something worse: It's evidence that journalists are ceding control when they should be seizing it, accepting canned news rather than breaking it. He is not a China expert. But the Chinese like old hands, aides with proximity to the Oval Office, and Mr. Podesta fills that bill. In addition, Mr. Podesta is passionate about climate change. He returned to the White House this year to help Mr. Obama fulfill his ambitious agenda to reduce coal consumption in the United States, and to shape a new global climate treaty...

Advancements in technology have fueled this White House's obsession with controlling the message. Jay Carney is free. But not loose – at least so far. After resigning as the press secretary for President Obama on June 20, Carney gave insight into the Obama administration’s handling of classified documents, and responded to criticism that this administration has been the most Orwellian in recent history. “I know — because I covered them — that this was said of Clinton and Bush, and it will probably be said of the next White House,” said Carney in a recent New York Times Magazine interview....

Barack Obama Wuz Here: We’re living a Bugs Bunny cartoon by Daniel Clark Once upon a time, Bugs Bunny got ticked off at America. It all started when he learned that the game commission’s bounty on rabbits was only two cents. “It’s discrimination!” he declared. When he went to Washington for an explanation, the commissioner told him that animals with large bounties on them are dangerous and destructive, whereas rabbits are “perfectly harmless.” Feeling disrespected, Bugs set out to prove him wrong. The enwaged wabbit embarked on a campaign of devastation, making sure that everyone knew he was responsible. In...

EEEEK!!! Vampires can't tolerate sunlight. Likewise Communists can't tolerate cameras at their meetings because that would shed light on who they are. As you can see in this VIDEO, Communists at Portland State University can't stand it when an outsider attends their "public" meeting with a camera. What is laughable is they claim to the cop they the guy with the camera is a "disruptor" but thanks to the camera we can see who the TRUE disruptors are. And childish in the extreme. I gotta ask... How many of these COmmies are also DUmmies? There must be a bunch. Anyway,...

What President Obama has been pushing for, and moving toward, is more insidious: government control of the economy, while leaving ownership in private hands. That way, politicians get to call the shots but, when their bright ideas lead to disaster, they can always blame those who own businesses in the private sector.
