Major demolition work was set to begin next week, which will also require a 40-hour closure of the 101 Freeway scheduled to being 10 p.m. on Feb. 5, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The freeway will be closed from the 10 Freeway near Union Station to the 5 Freeway interchange south of downtown during the demolition, the newspaper reported earlier this month.
The work will also require the onramp to the 101 Freeway from the westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway to be shut down.
Tuesday night, hundreds of people and cars gathered on the bridge to celebrate it's 84-year history.
"We're having our last cruise. This is a very historical bridge. Lot of movies, lot of commercials. I love it," Albert Morales said.

Liberals will leave it open until 4 weeks after the closing date.. and then hold up the construction and reopening for the next two years, making sure that only humans will suffer

Really? Bummer. This is one of the rare freeway bridges with any architectural detailing. Art Deco I suppose. I hope they rebuild it like it was.

Probably so. The only ones that will suffer though are those pesky unbelievers that insist on driving their evil fuel burning, climate changing, pollution causing cars to and from their job. At least some of the illegals take the bus.
And look, there’s a midnight basketball court underneath the near end. That means you won’t be walking down there at night.
You’d have to be out of your mind to go there at night. Even now.
Beats closing it after demolition.
Imagine how hopeful Los Angeles was when it was first built (1930s?) What a bright future was assumed.
And LA had it — for about 80 years.

Yeah, I kinda figured. But I guess they had to try to make it look like Mayberry.

Won’t look anything like that - the homeless will take over the park (as they’ve taken over several new LA River parks further up the river) and the graffiti artists will destroy all the signage and cover the bridge with gang graffiti marking their territory (like feral dogs) - as has happened in the “new,” “pedestrian friendly” redevelopment areas up the river (where I walk my dogs).
My elderly relatives remember L.A. in the 40s and 50s - how clean, safe and beautiful it was, especially the white sand beaches with clear blue water. By the time I was born, L.A. was waning and deteriorating.
The red cars once ran everywhere and were cheap, fast and efficient. Downtown was a treat. My mother said she always had to dress up when her family went downtown. Same in San Francisco.
The red cars are long gone, replaced by a “subway” metro system from nowhere to nowhere that no one wanted and few people ride. Just heard on local radio that ridership is down on ALL metro systems in LA - buses, “subways” and light rail (surprise, surprise). Carpool lanes too - (from 9% of traffic to 6% after 25 years).
The officials claim that “not enough money” has been poured into these systems. LOL. They’ll continue to waste $$ on transportation that no one wants including the insane high speed rail from Chowchilla to Merced. Carpool lanes are morphing into toll lanes - that no one uses. I drive the 110 next to the toll lane every day and it is nearly empty. The pols, of course, claim it is a “great success” and are promising to expand the toll lanes on all of L.A.’s freesays(anything to raise $$ - got to support L.A.’s massive 3rd world welfare population).
