Good afternoon gardeners. It's a rainy day, gray skies, and 42 degrees here in Mo. My tootsies are cool, time to dig out the winter socks, the summer cotton ones just are not doing the job. Not much gardening this week-just cooking and preparation for Thanksgiving.

We had a small group for the day, and I had more energy to get it done this year than for the last 10 years. Now feeling the after effects of eating carbs. Ugh. While I didn't gorge or anything. I did have my first mashed potatoes, yeast roll, cornbread dressing, and a tiny sliver of pumpkin pie since last year.

I guess those insulin receptors are still needing repair. Probably going to take a nap soon. We got the Netflix to TV thing figured out. Started with season 1 of TWD and had a Marathon TV fest. LOL

Hope everyone had a great Holiday and is doing well. Think of me tomorrow-I'll be ringing the Salvation Army Bell, and it's to be colder and raining-never was good at picking days for stuff like that. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Over here the air is clear, cold (28 degrees F), and dry.
The ground is not frozen yet so I am still working on terracing my hillsides.
We recently replaced the old wooden bridge with concrete; so I got a bunch of the old bridge timbers and I am using them for the terrace walls.
The timbers are 4”x16”x 14’; driving 1 1/2 gal pipe sections into the ground 4’ deep, the timbers go on the uphill side of the pipe then backfill from the slope to level. Should work out great for vegetable gardens and a small vineyard.
Just out of curiosity, does anybody have a good old fashioned recipe for chipped beef on toast, kind of miss my old Marine Corps breakfast favorite.

A toasty 74 here with rain but 43 about 60 miles NW. I think there's a chance there's a cold front on the way. The weatherman says that the cold front will hook up with warmer Hurricane Sandra moisture and we could see 4 inches. Just another fall shower in Texas.

Otherwise no gardening this week. Every time I was planning on doing the fall string trimming something came up, either weather, thanksgiving chores, what have you. I was really busted up about it.

It was 91 degrees yesterday on Guam

We have banana plants setting fruit.

Since each plant will produce 100-150 pounds of bananas and we have three plants I think i need to buy a dehydrator

Looking for tips on mulching my strawberry bed. I failed to do so last fall and the result was not good (multiple mornings I saw -33°F here in NW Pennsylvania.

I would like to save what is left of the patch. If I use pine needles can I just completely cover the plants now even though they are still green? Tips?

Could you add me to da list? Thanks.

As for gardening, it was a disappointing year. I’m solely to blame. Did a rotten job and not much grew. The winter gardens seem to be doing well. Two rucola patches doing well along with the kale. Beets are managing, much to my surprise.

Since I’m a beekeeper, more or less organic is my only choice.

ARE YOU TELLING ME TODAY IS FRIDAY??? It’s been a week like that on the left coast. We have beautiful clear skies with morning lows down to 30 degrees and we still have a few flowers blooming. I’ll post some photos when I get them on Flickr and formatted for FR. Yesterdays dinner was perfect and delicious as only Lady Bender can do consistently. the drumsticks were over done because I forgot to tent them with foil and Mrs Bender forgot the dinner rolls in the freezer..

Dress warmly, carry an umbrella. Hopefully you’ll be invited to stand just inside the door. We too will be ringing the bell, but don’t know the date yet.

Our Thanksgiving was wonderful with fantastic friends. Had a lot from our gardens.

We had a few family over and ate way to much. I too don’t eat sugar especially. We are in Mo too and have laid aside about 5 cords to feed the wood boiler through the winter. Hot water at 150 plus is a great side benefit. We are still eating tomatoes picked after the last hard frost, placed in the basement, and hope to have them yet at Christmas. Pray all goes well with you and yours.

The frost of the last two nights have not killed the tomatoes in the little "greenhouse" out in the garden and they have put out a fresh flush of flowers plus a few humming right along

A question. I have real problem with cabbage moths. Have y’all tried using something like a dipel spray? Had any success?

I can’t use most pesticides because of the bees.

Thanks lots.

My small garden provided me with fresh herbs, lettuce, pansies and even a perfect mini-rose. Probably the last of the season. Peas are flourishing and it looks like the are ready to produce flowers, followed by peas! Not shabby at all for the end of season.

36 degrees and wet, wet, wet here in Central Missouri today. All of the progress that I’d made pumping out the pond has been negated. It may be time to just give up on it until next summer.

We hosted Thanksgiving dinner for the family yesterday. I deep-fried one turkey and smoked another. Nobody went home hungry.

I retrieved a trailer load of waste wood from the sawmill this morning. Now it’s time to go out in the damp and throw it onto the woodpile. I’d rather sit on the couch where it’s warm and dry, but this will be the last load I need to get through the winter so it’s not all bad.
