CDC: Obesity Still Rising in US, Women Overtake Men
Newsmax ^ | November 12, 2015 | Associated Press

Obesity is still rising among American adults, despite more than a decade of public-awareness campaigns and other efforts to get people to watch their weight, and women have now overtaken men in the obese category, new government research shows.

For the past several years, experts thought the nation's alarming, decades-long rise in obesity had leveled off. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report Thursday that the obesity rate has climbed to nearly 38 percent of adults, up from 32 percent about a decade earlier.

I have seen pictures of people in East Texas from the 1920s and 1930s, some years prosperous, others not so much. These were rural folks, by and large, who raised their own vegetables and kept livestock. There were children, adults, and the elderly, male and female, black and white. There were doctors and businessmen, farmers and laborers. Few, if any, were overweight, none were obese. You go to East Texas now and that is clearly not the case.

The vast increase in starchy carbohydrates (breads, pasta, potato chips), far greater consumption of sugar through packaged foods and soft drinks, and the development of processed foods are the main culprits. Eighty or ninety years ago, flour, rice, dried beans, and some canned goods were about the only food bought at grocery stores. Restaurants were fewer in number. Fast food restaurants were not yet in existence.

Combined with a lesser degree of manual labor at both work and home, and you have a perfect storm that has led to mass obesity in this country.

Women have always been fatter than men

Just look around in most places

They just juggle what’s fat for each

Can’t be offending

Fat nation no question

Makes sense. Because more women are going to college, more women are gaining the "Freshman 40"

Does "Freshman 40" refer to the 40 lbs. which a college freshman invariably loses after leaving home - incl. saying "good-bye" to Mom's cooking, losing unlimited access to a well-stocked larder, etc. - and being forced to "make due" on a small food budget, improvised meals, etc.?

Then I know what you're talking about.

When I lived in Pago Pago, American Samoa, I just couldn't get over how enormously obese the Americans were there. But when I took the 30 min flight to the next island over; Western Samoa, everyone was thin. What was the difference.

It turns out that American Samoa imports all; ALL of it's food from Hawaii. That's right, the island is wholly stocked with American foods, processed using American techniques. No one on the island had small farms, and no one fished (The reefs produced a toxin that made the fish in-editable.)

Western Samoa, however grew most of it's food locally, and what they did import, came from New Zeiland and Fiji.

This makes you think; Is there some thing, or attribute that American food has that the rest of the world's food supply does not have? And, if so, is it contributing to American obesity?

When I was in university, “Freshman 40” was when the girls chunked out in their first year of college. Away from home, they pigged out in the student cafeteria and in their dorm rooms.

I like you a lot but it’s more than that

Folks who do less to improve their station are also more likely to be fat as hell

It is part of the same pattern

Self respect and reliance and responsibility

Not manual labor or more food

They just don’t have the care or discipline

Go in their homes

Or cars

Filth and sloth

Uncleanliness
Bastard kids one after another

It’s Idiocracy basically

It’s pathetic

Imagine being born into Honey Boo Boo and looking out at the world going why me?

I grew up when poor people of any color still had dignity and kept neat homes and strived

Something is broke and it’s their own damned faults

Nothing else

But how could they afford it? I budgeted 40 cents a day for a Yami Yoghurt from a vending machine for my noonday meal - what a luxury! Never set foot in the cafeteria - prices were too high!

Freshman students usually live in dormitories and are on meal plans.

Blame the stupid food pyramid. Limit sugars, carbs, grains. Eat more lean meat.

Since I moved to Maui, I don’t see many fat women for some reason... many of the women are thin and brown.

Another thing here. So many doctors are Japanese. Sue me, but I don’t want a Japanese doctor.

Also only a percentage of doctors here take Medicare. Off subject, I know but it took me ages here to find a doctor who would take Medicare and United Health Care.

The only good news is .. I’m not fat.

I agree that we certainly are not as active as many people were back in the 1920s-30s, and thank God for that! If you consume more calories than you burn off, you will put on weight... at least that is what they tell me, and I am still trying very hard to care. The body was designed to consume whatever it can find... including a nice bag of chips ;)
