An 800 ft. cargo vessel sailing from Jacksonville to San Juan in the vicinity of a major hurricane with 33 crew on board loses power, starts listing, sends a distress signal and goes missing now for four days. Drudge has a link to the story just as a side of other hurricane stories. The story goes largely ignored by the mainstream media. Even Free Republic has taken it down from Breaking and Front Page news.
That's 33 souls, 28 of which are Americans, possibly lost at sea or struggling to survive. A major U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue effort is underway right now, and the incident is barely registering.
Why the blackout? Can the Trump and Putin antics really overshadow a major real-life survival or disaster news item, as it is happening?
I am not one for conspiracy theories, but isn't it the lack of real, factual information which fuels "alternate news" sources?
Or do people, including FR, do no just care and if it's not about politicians and "celebrities", it does not exist?

I was wondering how the heck in this day and age does a ship go into a hurricane with all of the technology available.
Boats sink all the time with no coverage. Because boats sink all the time. It’s a dog bites man story. Especially when it’s just a cargo vessel with 33 people on it. Cruise ship with 3000 is news.
Is statistically identical in incident rate to any other piece of coastal water and was by and large invented for a grocery store circular.

This ship spent a lot f time moored in Baltimore. I remember seeing it at the dock when I moved to Baltimore in 2010.

If you really want to see scary, look for ‘’piloting in heavy seas’’ on you tube.
But I love the ocean so much. If I’d been born a man, I would surely have been a sailor. It is an irresistible attraction.
I’ll reserve further comments about Trump until I actually see him go through the full nomination process and the general election. Until then, we have seen this before and in the past it’s just been a show.
On the blackout, only until late yesterday and today has this story gotten legs in the MSM. FR however, seems to be sitting this story out and makes me wonder what drives some people here if not the MSM.
But, this story might be a big deal for me but maybe not to those who don’t depend on the maritime trade. Which is fine, really. The main point of my thread is to discuss how some really interesting stories lack the traction of more menial stories.

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — The latest on the search for a cargo ship missing off the coast of Bahamas (all times local):
3 p.m.
An Air Force base in south Mississippi says two planes with ‘Hurricane Hunter’ air crews that flew into Hurricane Joaquin had also been involved in the search for the U.S. cargo ship lost with 33 people on board.
Maj. Marnee Lasurdo told the Sun Herald of Biloxi that the two C-130 crews were studying the storm on Thursday when the Coast Guard asked their help. She says the crews searched near the Bahamas on Thursday and Friday for the 790-foot El Faro.

The owner of the missing cargo ship says a contracted tugboat and another of its ships have found a container that appears to be from the El Faro.
But Tim Nolan, president of TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico, says in a statement “there has been no sighting of the El Faro or any life boats.”
