A major maritime disaster is underway in the Atlantic and it is subject to a media blackout?

An 800 ft. cargo vessel sailing from Jacksonville to San Juan in the vicinity of a major hurricane with 33 crew on board loses power, starts listing, sends a distress signal and goes missing now for four days. Drudge has a link to the story just as a side of other hurricane stories. The story goes largely ignored by the mainstream media. Even Free Republic has taken it down from Breaking and Front Page news.

That's 33 souls, 28 of which are Americans, possibly lost at sea or struggling to survive. A major U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue effort is underway right now, and the incident is barely registering.

Why the blackout? Can the Trump and Putin antics really overshadow a major real-life survival or disaster news item, as it is happening?

I am not one for conspiracy theories, but isn't it the lack of real, factual information which fuels "alternate news" sources?

Or do people, including FR, do no just care and if it's not about politicians and "celebrities", it does not exist?

33 souls missing at sea. A drunk falling of a cruise ship gets more press than this!

I don't mean to dish FR and the mods, but honestly, what qualifies as Breaking News or even Front Page News? Keeping the public involved in a major search and rescue effort keeps the government on its toes and assures that proper resources are allocated to the effort. Your comments, if anybody cares?

What more is there to say?

It went out into a hurricane. They are looking for it.

There is an excellent ongoing thread over on CruisersForum, a sailing website.

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f122/safety-of-ships-lifeboats-in-major-storms-153992.html

Here is a 4 minute youtube video showing a world-record freefall lifeboat drop from 200 feet up.

http://youtu.be/2uK3gxZs4jE

Here is an “easy” 45’ drop. These are installed on many ships around the world. Think “Captain Phillips” and the Maersk Alabama.

Maybe because there's not much of anything to report so far.

Ship missing, they're searching.

It is unusual that we don't have the usual speculation and blather.

Setting sail into the jaws of a Cat 4 hurricane is hardly ever a good idea.
Even the Lone Ranger might have trouble responding to your SOS

I fear the outcome is probably known

How many ships disappear each year? | Actuarial Eye | March 30, 2014

Not to say the losses aren't newsworthy, and that's largely the point of the linked article - that for whatever reasons, the press gives ship losses low priority, compared with, say, shark attacks.

The liberates are searching for a means to link climate change with the sinking. When this happens, rest assured it’ll be headline news.

The loss is indeed a bad thing, but these days “black lives matter”, “hands up, don’t shoot” etc. are the calling cards of those not blessed with above room temp IQ.

It is a tragedy for several dozen families; a matter of concern to those involved in the search effort, but is not of global or even regional consequence.

Best coverage will probably be out of Jacksonville; monitor that media if it is of concern to you.

The death toll is roughly equivalent to a weekend in Chicago, or two or three wrecks involving illegals in the southwest.

Yeah. The public has a thirst for News in a story like this, but absent any new facts all we get is conjecture from non-experts blathering on about this & that. I can wait until the searchers turn something up.

Now, check out the lifeboats on El Faro.

Which do you think has a better chance of a successful deployment in a hurricane, in 30 foot plus seas, with the ship rolling 45* side to side after losing power, beam on to the wind and waves?

You want news coverage? Leak to the press that those sailors are all Muslim homosexuals on a “gun free” ship captained by a black transgender who looks like Kim Kardashian.

Fox had a detailed story on this yesterday, but we simply don’t have any details and the search has been rather extensive.

I wonder why they put to sea given the weather. Seems like the nautical equivalent of running with scissors— you’re basically playing the odds.

I heard the ship’s Captain had a simulator in his apartment, is jihadi-linked and has suicidal posts on his facebok page.

There...that’ll do it. /s

Btw: I agree completely. Thoughts and prayers to the families...doesnt look good...

From one of your links. If you are already leaking and listing 15 degrees I think it difficult to launch life boats from such a vessel as they appear stowed.
