“Until then, we have seen this before and in the past it’s just been a show.”

Why do you day that? When have you seen Trump leading as a presidential candidate for months?

That’s a frighteningly beautiful picture. I’m not a seaman, by any stretch, but I’ve done a couple of transatlantics on cruise ships. On my last one, transiting the North Sea to Iceland from Norway, we hit a storm while we were in bed. I heard a sloshing outside our balcony door and wondered who the hell could be washing windows at night in the cold? When I slid the curtains open I saw that it was the sea splashing against the ship. At our height. We were on Deck 10. I immediately went to bed and only then did I feel the roller coaster. Thankfully we had great stabilizers - almost no rolling motion - and full systems. I can’t imagine what goes in a ship under no command in those conditions.

I’m sorry that I mentioned Trump at all lest this thread about a real life major maritime adventure be hijacked. I know that is not your intention.

“I know that is not your intention.”

No, but it makes me suspicious, with all that is going on, with the murders in Oregon being foremost, that you just happened to connect Trump with Putin in the same sentence.

As for the ship, no one seems to know anything.

This is probably very bad news, although it’s possible she lost a few containers from the reported 15% list.

Today was good weather for searching.

There is ALWAYS uncertainty with hurricanes. Why didn’t this ship stay in port? The ship could have been destroyed tied up at the dock but the people might not have died.

> Why didn’t this ship stay in port?

Because when they left port on Tuesday morning this was the situation:

And this was the forecast:

And the ship had sufficient safety equipment for the expected conditions.

Other than that, why don't you call the company and ask? http://elfaroincident.com/

Sometimes, despite all the planning, knowledge, skill, and technology, the unforeseen happens.

Mighty poor blackout is right.

Looks like someone didn’t do their homework.

Not surprised of all the coverage though; it just didn’t make sense that something like this would be overlooked by everybody.

“Unforeseen happens”.

Yes it was a hurricane, that happens. They were stupid not to wait and see. What would have a 48 hour wait matter?

It was not a hurricane nor was it forecast to become a hurricane, and it was forecast to go north away from the area.

I’ve given the links to the NHC forecast archive. Take off your 20-20 hindsight goggles and go read what was and what was expected at the time.

I don’t think that’s the case here. The captain has over two decades at sea, much of it in heavy weather. He has an excellent reputation and is not a stupid man.

At any rate, the Coast Guard has found the debris field, over a hundred miles around so the hopes for these mariners is coming to a sad end.

Lifeboats?

Where?

Is that them hanging from that yardarm sort of thing, abeam the funnel, above the “SEA STAR” label?

You are correct. CNN went wall to wall. And it was not only macabre, it was stupid.

This story is also a sub plot of a larger hurricane/rainfall story.

Until they have bodies...the networks won’t cover it.

Yep, way up there. Imagine trying to launch while rolling 45* side to side in 40 foot waves.
