The mother of a man who tried to launch a firework off the top of his head for July Fourth and was killed instantly said Monday she's advocating for stricter controls about who can use the explosives.
Devon Staples, 22, and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks Saturday night in a backyard in Staples' eastern Maine hometown, Calais, when the accident happened with a reloadable fireworks mortar tube, police have said.

That pretty much is the beginning, middle, and end of what we need to know about this case. The guy tried to use his head as a mortar baseplate, and he paid the price.
I’m sorry the guy is dead, and pray for the mother to find her way out of her grief. But blaming the fireworks here is about as sensible as blaming the brewery and/or distillery who produced whatever the guy was drinking that night (reports are he was quite inebriated).
The guy did a stupid, stupid thing, and it killed him. It’s a hard truth, but it is the truth, just the same.

from the story i read, i inferred from the comments made by the witnesses who rushed to his aid, that his head was essentially pink misted. he likely didn’t feel a thing. a tough way to go, but not messing about with explosives while you’re drunk is a survival skill that the vast majority of humans in recorded history have mastered. he apparently was part of the 0.0000000000001% that didn’t.

It used to be the great lawnmower boxtop concern was that people might forget to put the oil in. Now the worry is they'll start it in the box and kick the box around the long grass in the yard claiming "this damned thing doesn't work at all, and it hurts my foot".

I agree, there should be a warning not to put explosives on your head. It’s an easy mistake to make, I was about to do it myself before I came across this informative article.
