Is India higher on the risk list than America or Morocco or Egypt? \ What are your chances of getting food poisoning when you are travelling or on a holiday trip abroad? Pretty high according to law firm Slater and Gordon.

The research from travel specialists at the British law firm, says that in some countries the risk is as high as 30 per cent.

Slater and Gordon travel specialists asked 2,000 travellers to report their bathroom experiences abroad, according to the British publication Express.

The firm originally funded the study because they noticed that there was a rise in the number of people requesting their services after falling ill while travelling.

According to Slater and Gordon, countries where you’re most likely to get food poisoning are...

1. Spain (30%)

2. Turkey (15%)

3. Egypt (13%)

4. Greece (12%)

5. France (12%)

6. Italy (8%)

7. America (7%)

8. India (7%)

9. Morocco (6%)

10. Thailand (6%)

They interviewed 2000 travelers?

Come on now. They probably got that many responses, just from those countries.

There are lots and lots of countries in the world. 2000 travelers don’t ever start to get a good overall picture.

Interesting, given the media narrative the last 6 years-—Mexico.

I do not believe those numbers. I have visited Spain with my wife several times in the last few years. Neither one of us became ill. We stayed and ate where the Spanish locals did. We had no problems and the food was good.

We did not stay in the “tourist hotels.” Once we left Madrid in our rental car, we only meet one American in the next ten days.

I have had food poisoning in my life three times, all in the US of A. Actually I am not terribly sure what constitutes official food poisoning. For me all three times it was a rapid onset condition about an hour after I ate and had me on the toilet with a bucket in front of me continually for about three hours filling up both and drinking as much water as I could get down between bouts of vomiting. I have been to Mexico, a year in Vietnam eating locally rather often and several years in Istanbul in the 50s.

And Mickey’s isn’t on the list because for food poisoning to occur, there has to be food.

I have lived in both Spain and France, and do not think I suffered food poisoning in either country. I probably ate out more in Spain than in France.

I’m sure there are better ways to determine incidence of food poisoning than sending questionnaires to tourists. Maybe government regulatory agencies that follow this stuff would be better sources.

Having worked in a related area, I remain convinced that food grown and processed in the U.S. Is probably the safest although if you eat any food raw, or undercooked, you are at risk of microbial attacks, preformed toxins that are heat resistant, and chemical residues. Keep in mind that food in the U.S. may come from foreign countries. China has purposely adulterated foods that poisoned people and pets—never put anything in your mouth made in China. Be cautious when traveling especially in 3rd world crapholes. At some point, everyone gets food poisoning, there is no escape since the microbes are ubiquitous.

No offense, but anecdotal evidence is not proof.

You are right. Public health and disease control and monitoring agencies collect data and are the best sources of info assuming they are honest. I have traveled in a dozen or so, civilized countries and had few problems.

Taco Bell is about the least likely place to get food poisoning.

I’m sure there are better ways to determine incidence of food poisoning than sending questionnaires to tourists.

One way would be to install turnstiles with digital counters outside of the restrooms at popular tourist attractions.

I got severe food poisoning in Casablanca at the Ramadan feast.

We all did. Lasted three weeks. I couldn’t even keep saliva down.

The one time I got it (and about 50 people I work with) was at an outdoor work party where someone decided to “save some money” and left the Macaroni Salad outside in the 90+ heat for several hours. I managed to limp into work and not miss any days - others went to the hospital.

It’s easy to tell everyone to stay away from any food outdoors after that, but I’m not that picky. But if the food has Mayonnaise in it, I will do my best to know its history - and for that, I trust a food chain much more than a mom-and-pop and much more than some people doing it one time. I base it on what a particular party has to lose, and an operation like McDonald’s would have lost millions in that situation...so they’re less likely to screw up (and they also know not to do dumb things). Of course it all comes down to humans - and if a manager at a particular McDonald’s screws up, I’m out of luck - but at least that manager has some training understands he’ll likely be personally bankrupt - so it helps.
