Is this ET? Mystery of strange radio bursts from space

Mysterious radio wave flashes from far outside the galaxy are proving tough for astronomers to explain. Is it pulsars? A spy satellite? Or an alien message?

BURSTS of radio waves flashing across the sky seem to follow a mathematical pattern. If the pattern is real, either some strange celestial physics is going on, or the bursts are artificial, produced by human – or alien – technology.

Telescopes have been picking up so-called fast radio bursts (FRBs) since 2001. They last just a few milliseconds and erupt with about as much energy as the sun releases in a month. Ten have been detected so far, most recently in 2014, when the Parkes Telescope in New South Wales, Australia, caught a burst in action for the first time. The others were found by sifting through data after the bursts had arrived at Earth. No one knows what causes them, but the brevity of the bursts means their source has to be small – hundreds of kilometres across at most – so they can't be from ordinary stars. And they seem to come from far outside the galaxy.

The weird part is that they all fit a pattern that doesn't match what we know about cosmic physics.

To calculate how far the bursts have come, astronomers use a concept called the dispersion measure. Each burst covers a range of radio frequencies, as if the whole FM band were playing the same song. But electrons in space scatter and delay the radiation, so that higher frequency waves make it across space faster than lower frequency waves. The more space the signal crosses, the bigger the difference, or dispersion measure, between the arrival time of high and low frequencies – and the further the signal has traveled.

Thanks Red Badger. Probably the sound of civilizations being destroyed by A) natural events such as supernovae and impacts, B) themselves, or C) other civilizations. By the time there's a significant permanent human presence on Mars -- in the area of a century from now -- the first superluminal probe will be launched to Alpha Centauri. Extra to String Theory, APoD.

They key word is “known”. Probably just some kind of pulsar or something.

Skeptical of anything from “New Scientist”. Until a more reputable journal picks this up it’s just noise.

Pinging the unidentified aerial phenomena list (ufo).

May 8, 1950-This is one of the most famous UFO pictures ever taken.
Photographed by Paul Trent, and first witnessed by his wife.
They were published in a local newspaper in McMinnville, Oregon.
Shortly thereafter, the Trent photos were published in Life magazine edition of June 26, 1950.
The rest is history.
(These photos have been deemed authentic for over 50 years. The analysis of the McMinnville photos by Dr.Bruce Maccabee PhD, can be found here = http://brumac.8k.com/trent1.html )

Those interested in the uap/ufo ping list, please Freepmail
LasVegasDave (freepmail works best)
if you would like your name added to the list.
( Approximately 200+ freepers are currently on the ping list ).

If you take the multiples of 187.5 from the blue chart above for each pulse, and take their average (3.8), then multiply by 187.5, you get 712.5

4+4+2+5+4+6+3+3+4+3=38 avg: 38/10=3.8 so 187.5*3.8=712.5

Here ya go:

Iowa Code 712.5 RECKLESS USE OF FIRE OR EXPLOSIVES. Any person who shall so use fire or any incendiary or explosive device or material as to recklessly endanger the property or safety of another shall be guilty of a serious misdemeanor.

Hence it stands to reason that this phenomena roughly translates to "Hold my beer and watch this!"

I believe this FR thread more clearly explains it: One Fine September Morning
