Suicide risk advisory for ADHD drugs comes ‘out of the blue’ and has terrified families, doctor says
National Post ^ | March 31, 2015 | Tom Blackwell

Health Canada may have unduly “terrified” families Monday with a surprise warning that an array of widely used ADHD drugs could boost the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions in patients, says a prominent psychiatrist.

With more than four million prescriptions for the medications dispensed yearly in Canada, the regulator said new and stronger warnings will soon be included in the products’ labelling to reflect the possible suicide-related risk.

It also advised patients and their families to keep an eye out for the side effect, while stressing that the drugs’ benefits continue to outweigh their potential risks.

Still, one specialist complained that Health Canada gave doctors no chance to prepare parents for the announcement, and has yet to reveal the source of the information behind it.

That means one out of nine people in Canada are taking these drugs ... wonder what the number is here.

ADHD and other psychotropic drugs affect fundamental neurochemical systems in a manner that can possibly cause a wide variety of psychological issues. This includes suicide.

No one should ever be surprised of such an association.

When I was a kid, I was what they called “hyperactive” (hold had out and it twitches on its own, leg kicks uncontrollably).

A combination of a firm hand and life teaching me stuff worked it out in the long run.

Nowadays if a boy just acts like a boy, they medicate him into submission.

ADHD medication is child abuse, except for EXTREME cases.

10 Years ago Doctors asserted that these drugs are prescribed at 3 times the rate of occurrence of the supposed underlying condition.

Any deaths caused by government or the medical establishment don’t matter. They are our rulers and anyone who questions them are wackadoodles.

50,000 Americans have died from CAFE standards. Shhh...

More people die from C-Diff (caused by poor hygene in hospitals) than car wrecks. Bet you never even heard of it.

But if some poor parent forgets a kid in a hot car, it’s front page news and prison for them.

How DARE anyone question a drug? What are they, “Anti-Science”???

Didn’t know they were amphetamines. Maybe not all?

Friend of mine takes Concerta. Normally she talks fast and is pretty hyper (just try keeping up with her in a mall).
She said when she started taking it the action of the drug felt like “rubber bands, pulling her wandering mind back to the task at hand.” For example, she marveled that she was able to clean the garage for hours - something she’d never done before because she got distracted. If anything, the drug seems to have calmed her 100mph speech and changes of subject.

Here's the source of the information - and the reason for the sudden announcement:

On the other hand , a retarded person can be set to work on the same project for hours, unaware of anything going on around them.

Maybe being easily distracted is just an active survival instinct.

This is such an old story. Deeply depressed people who take these drugs must be monitored. As the depression lifts, the depressed person develops enough energy to kill himself. These drugs can also be very beneficial but it must be under a doctor’s treatment and care.

“HuH???? suicide is an accepted risk???”

Yea, that’s where my radar went off.

“About 4.5 million prescriptions for the various ADHD drugs, costing $408 million, were sold last year,”

And that’s what really makes it an “accepted risk”.
$408 million, a cheap sellout but that’s Canada. At least
here in the states the sellout is in billions and it helped
get elected many congressmen and presidents.
