The doors to Downton Abbey are finally closing.
Carnival Films and ITV have announced that there will be no return to the famous home of the Crawley family after the sixth season airs, as they want to end on a high.
Downton Abbey has been a huge international success, selling to broadcasters around the world, but its ratings in Britain had started flagging.
NBC Universal, which owns the production company behind the show, said in an internal note to staff that the long-running drama was approaching its natural conclusion.
The internal note, seen by the Daily Mail, said: Whilst we are all sad to see Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neames unique drama approaching its natural conclusion, the difficult decision has been taken to wrap up production while the show is still at its peak in popularity, as well as in the quality of the storylines and the series overall.
Rather than allow any further media speculation about the shows future, we want to use todays announcement to build anticipation for the momentous final season.

Thank God! It’ a silly Brit soap opera.
Oh, c’mon! The fashions, the cars, and the table settings are amazing. You don’t have to watch it, if you don’t like it.
Although I count myself as a fan, I agree that it is time for it to end. I’m sick of the whiny Edith, the nasty Mary, and the insipid Cora.
I’m waiting for Bates to kill them all and limp out of the place.
Agreed! Wouldn’t you just like to slap Edith in the face and tell her to suck it up? Then, I’d slap Mary twice and tell her to behave with kindness for her sister.
Even the dog was smart enough to die.
Love the show. Looking forward to watching the final season.
Will they replace the dog in Season 6?
I love the clothes and the cars. The people, not so much.
That would be an awesome ending. I also would like to see that one cook who is going to inherit a lot of money save Downton and become an upstairs person. I have always hated Edith...I thought the wrong sister died....lol.
Big finale would be Mary and Edith in a mud pit fighting each other...they both lose.
Replace the dog? It’s England, how about a Yorkie?
We already had Mary wallowing in pig slop in her fine clothes with one of her beaux.
3 Corgis. (They often come in 3s. They are small, take 3.)
I’ve seen ONE episode - the start of Season 5. I have Seasons 1 & 2 on DVD which I am saving for a time when I have a week straight to indulge myself.
We can console ourselves with old episodes of, ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’ on YouTube after that! :)
Yes! Looking forward to exploring some other lesser knowns series...I’m such an Anglophile, but the Downton drama is wearing thin.
Received, ‘Outlander’ from Netflix, today. Going to give that a look-see, tonight.
I’m up to date on the ‘Sherlock’ series with Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s awesome, if you haven’t see it. No new episodes until a Christmas Special in December 2015, then new episodes in 2016.
‘Moriarty’ is very crazy/creepy in this one!
I caught up on the whole series last year because my daughters enjoyed it so much. Season 5 (just completed) seemed a little much, however. You are probably just fine with what you’ve seen. Then watch the wrap up when Season 6 comes out on PBS next year.
One of my daughters called my attention to the dog at the beginning of Season 5. “How old is that dog, anyway?” she asked. “She should be dead by now.”
Sure enough, poor old Isis died towards the end of Season 5, spending her last night on the silken coverlet of Cora’s bed.
Also try, ‘Foyle’s War.’ Loved, loved, LOVED that series! Set in WWII right before the Nazis invade England. All of the ‘mysteries’ are war-related. Very well done!
I can’t watch anything where the dog dies, LOL!
