Reuters) - Starbucks Corp Chief Executive Howard Schultz has deftly navigated thorny issues such as gay marriage, gun control and Congressional gridlock, but his move to weigh in on U.S. race relations has brewed up a social media backlash.

The world's biggest coffee chain kicked off the discussion when it published full-page ads in major U.S. newspapers earlier this week with the words "Shall We Overcome?" at center page and "RaceTogether" and the Starbucks logo near the bottom.

It’s fun Lucy... besides I’d like to see Starbucks PROVE it’s not a racist decision. I think it is...

People have the right to buy coffee where ever they want to - but it looks like Starbucks thinks they’re too upscale for the black community. They’re not in any all black areas...

They probably are right, opening in those areas would be bad business. Those folks go for cheaper coffee places like McDonalds as I do.

This stupid ‘race together’ promo is probably about getting college educated blacks in white yuppie areas to buy their coffee.

I don't.

You're right... odd, but that's thing blacks and conservatives have in common ... neither group is stupid enough to pay Starbucks prices for the privilege of sitting next to a white liberal elite.

More-so, I honesty never liked the taste of SBs coffee.

McDonald's always tasted better to me and was always rated better than StarBucks

StarBucks is for those who want the status of a SBs labeled cup with lots of sugar and fat for ~ $5 a pop.

I just want good tasting no flavored black coffee, less than a buck at McDs

It could be racism on Starbuck’s part that they don't have coffee houses in these predominantly black areas OR perhaps because they serve very BAD coffee? Around here we have Kelly's Market (Mobil Oil products) and they have coffee to quench the thirst of coffee lovers. They use Kona coffee and have various creamers including Irish cream, hazelnut, and amaretto flavors. For big coffee drinkers, you can buy a huge thermal mug and refills are $0.69 (with your Kelly's mug) 24/7/365. You can't beat the price or coffee.

Thanks GOPJ. Starbucks mgmt is kidding itself if it thinks their white lib larvae customer demographic is going to put up with fake dialogue about “white privilege” reparations screaming a-holes disrupting people’s lunches, etc, all while still being expected to pay $4 for a cup of freakin’ coffee.

weird how Starbucks does not open in black areas and yet they harp on about diversity etc.

It’s like liberals who live in their white elitist areas and preach diversity but would never go into a black area or even live there.

That will backfire. Who wants that aggravation? It used to be that you weren’t assaulted with diversity crap until you entered the workplace. Now you’ll be subjected to it 20 minutes earlier when picking up your coffee? You pretty much have to go to work; you don’t have to go to Starbucks. They’ll lose business.

I’ll have a Mocha Latte and could you give me your opinion about this scenario?
If four blacks kill a defenseless 94 y/o white women is that a racially motivated hate crime?

so they would not make money in black areas, why?

Of course it’s racism to not open in those areas and why anyone would even want to spend money in the liberal cess pit of over priced coffee, where you make it yourself to have a liberal view point pushed on you, while going in there with a bunch of far left lay abouts who sit there for hours telling each other how smart they are.

Over priced burned coffee and some people think they are cool for going there, suckers.

always makes me laugh at how the suckers who go to Starbucks think they are so cool by buying over priced coffee which tastes like crap while observing a bunch of lazy liberals siting there for hours telling each other how smart and cool they are.

I guarantee that there are some on here who still go to Starbucks because they think they are cool in front of their elitist pals

The Starbucks CEO has put out the white liberal elite meme - hidden racism... heavy with creamy white guilt.

I'll bet more blacks AND whites have a great cup of coffee at Kelly's Market - for a better price. Starbucks is for white liberal elites - people with more money than brains... Thanks for sharing MasterGunner...

Beyond the fact that this move of theirs is incredibly patronizing to their patrons :-) (couldn’t help that one) , I have read on FR that Starbucks doesn’t hire blacks and doesn’t locate in black neighborhoods.

Sounds like they are the last business that should be pulling this holier than thou crap.

Starbucks has always had an “elitist” attitude that permeates the place. The coffee is grossly overpriced and everything reeks of pretentiousness. To me, I like good, full flavored, strong coffee without an acidic bite. Starbucks has an acidic taste, is weak, and not much on flavor. Start adding fancy creams and sugar and other stuff and it’s not coffee for my taste.

You are very correct about Kelly’s Market and its patrons. Lots of patrons of all colors go their for both fuel, food, drink, and other convenience items. The insulated Mug (roughly four big cups) cost $1.69 + $0.69 for a fill. Now, I just bring in the cup and the refills are $0.69. That’s outstanding coffee at a great price!
