The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Farmers were the first gamblers
Imagine the first of the crop, and the money that could bring
That is why farming and gardening is for gamblers, - you could win big time , ..or go " craps".
Look to Joe Bastardi for tomorow's Springtime forecast, or as "Groucho" used to say :" You bet your life", as a farmer and your livliehood .
Me , I'll wait until tomorrow, and see the Spr4ing forecast ...

Well...it’s 85 now in the shade, but I’ll be darned if i turn on the A/C before April!

Thanks, Marcella. We live in the Bible belt, and everyone here knows we’re Christians. Will look for appropriate external insignia that the dogs and cats can’t remove during their bouts of enthusiasm and wear it!
It’s true. I’d hate to have to be dependent upon my garden to keep us from starving, and yet there may come a time....
Ha Ha, and here I was thinking that the upper forties was such an improvement. LOL
Right! I wait until the triple digits hit myself, but since I hang out in the basement so much, it’s about 10 degrees cooler there than outdoors.
Too true for all of us. We have become too dependant on the local supermarket and on transportation to provide our daily sustainance, food , and entertainment.
But what do we do if the economic , or transportation system breaks down ?
This system breakdown has already happened in Europe, recently,.. what about here ?
Learn from the past - the USA depression of 1930's and from WW2 for recipies for survival and sustanance.
HYBRIDS : designed for plant vigor, productivity, marketability , insect and disease resistance.
Open pollinated/ Hierlooms: For "ole-timey" flavor, with emphasis on flavor ,plant succession, and exact reporduction.
Life is a gamble : sometimes by weather, circumstance , or happenstance, or geographic location.
Right now my garden and I have 22 inches of SNOW white "GLow-Bull WARMING" in the garden, and have had a total of 5 hours of thaw all the month of Febuary.
I look forward to Spring, moreso than most of you all !
I have been buying my seeds from Territorial Seed Company and some from Pinetree.
They have non-hybridized seeds.
I have had success with saving my own tomato seeds and this year I am trying with other veggies.
We could not survive on what I grow either, but it sure is a nice supplement to the menu to walk outside and pick dinner.
Plus the growing season isn’t long enough.
I sure wish someone would explain to me why global warming is not good for us. A longer growing season, more food, fewer heating bills, better gas mileage on the cars, less salt on the roads, lower taxes from less road maintenance.
I’d like to understand why that all is a problem.....
I was there too. McCoy AFB. Orlando was a sleepy little town and had no housing for the military, for while. We lived wherever we could. I lived across from an Orange Grove. The owner was very nice and told me we could pick what we could reach. Now it’s a shopping center. Times change.

We don’t have basements in Florida! LOL!
I was concerned with my cabbage, broccoli and strawberry plants in the raised gardens when we had ice and snow. The loved it. We’d packed them with straw, and the grew right through it. I need to check the potatoes in the community garden, we’ve also had some good rains and the garden has a lot of puddles in the walkways, so I’m waiting for the water to “sink in”.
A couple of freezing nights and about 5 days of drip made for little progress this last week. I even had a crop of asparagus get hammered by the semi-late freeze. What's been harvested so far has been great.
Looks like our cold is over with a chance of decent rainfall the next couple and then back to the 60s.
Today was fertilize the acid lovers (lemons and blueberries), mow a bit and fertilize the small patch of grass in the back. And get started on the weeds. Arg! I put the weeds in a curbside sized trash can as I go and managed to fill it up 3 times. And I've got a lot more to go.
Also sowed more salad green seeds, some herb seeds and a few potatoes that missed the main planting a while back.
Next up is to extend a water line about 60'. Tired of hauling hose. Nothing complicated about the plumbing but digging any kind of trench isn't all that much fun here.

That’s a very bad winter. The school children must have been distressed at having to spend time in school during the summer to make up for lost time. It’s often an issue here.
