freerepublic | 3/6/2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 03/06/2015 12:47:33 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

One of the reasons I do not believe in this Glowbull Warming crap is we used to have citrus groves as far north as southern Georgia.

Along Interstate 10, east of Tallahassee, there is an old abandoned orange grove where all the trees have died from back in those times.

You can’t grow citrus trees this far north any more. Gainesville is about the limit.

If you want to see the long term effects of ‘Climate Change’ , this is it. It’s getting colder.....................

It can get cold in Florida! How distressing to lose the chance for fruit on your trees for a season. I remember when my sister (who lived in Palmetto) lost a ficus tree in her yard due to a cold snap.

Johnny and I were iced in twice this week. We were in the 20s every night and one of those days, it stayed in the 20s (I think I remember that). I have looked at the temp gauge so many times this week, I forget when it was what.

I heard when this last snow/sleet/ice came in, thousands in Fort Worth were without power. I was afraid Johnny might be without power but that didn’t happen, thank goodness.

We are in the 50s today with sun so banks of snow/ice are melting. Last night, all the outdoor metal furniture were covered with ice. Bob took Yorkie, Prissy, out the front door (on a leash) and a man stopped his car to scrape the ice off his windshield and Prissy tried to go to him, stepping on ice and just spinning her wheels - not going anywhere. Both Bob and the man had a good laugh at the little dog trying to get traction on the ice. She also does not like stepping in snow.

I hope this is our last serious problem with the roads.

Wooo hoooo! I made progress this week. All the plants I will set out have been planted in flats and the peas are planted in the garden! One more cold night then spring is here!

Both the peppers and Amish paste tomatoes have been transplanted. The peppers are jalapenos. We also are growing a couple of Poblanos from last year's seeds. Planted eight. Two came up and look puny.
Also have a couple Sweet 1 million tomatoes and they're doing well.

>>It was an agricultural center and was surrounded by citrus trees for miles and miles.......<<

Most of those froze out in the early 80s and weren't replaced.

Well, that’s a pain. When we planted fruit trees, we planted dwarf trees so that we could cover them and whatever else pretty easy, but we didn’t contemplate pollination by hand.

There was some damage to our hardwood floor and some staining of the ceiling. It could have been far worse had our almost 13 year old Ridgeback girl not awakened us at her usual time of 4 AM. Mr. T takes her downstairs and outside, and then brings her into the living room to sleep on the sofa. That’s when he discovered the pool of water, thank goodness.

I am tempted to plant some taters, even though it’s early. I have some seed taters from last year that have sprouted and look more than ready. LOL

Our poor little dog has slipped, slided, and fell down so many times this week. We have a fenced in yard for her, so I didn’t have to get out and risk falling.

That sounds good. Hubby is just now getting ready to start some seeds. He brought a bunch back from the feed store.

That is fortunate, to limit damage.
