280-pound catfish: Wels catfish caught by Italian fisherman could swallow a man

The 280-pound catfish caught by an Italian fisherman is a record-setting wels catfish. With an enormous weight of 280 pounds and a length of 8.8 feet, the catfish caught by Dino Ferrari has some people wondering whether the monstrous catfish could in fact eat a man if it wanted to do so.

According to a Feb. 24 USA Today report, the photo taken of the Italian fisherman and his massive catch certainly seems to show “that this thing could just swallow an adult if it wanted to. It’s enormous.”

Italian fisherman Dino Ferrari caught the wels catfish on Thursday in the Po Delta, which is part of the famous Po River. With a length of more than 400 miles, the Po River is the longest river in Italy. The Po River and the Delta are known among fishermen for big wels catfish – but a length of 8.8 feet astonished even Ferrari, who is an expert fisherman.

The wels catfish is a fresh and salt water fish native to central, southern, and eastern Europe. As can be seen in the picture, it is scaleless with a broad, flat head and wide mouth. The wels catfish is the second-largest freshwater fish found in the Po region. The largest fish is the beluga sturgeon which can reportedly weigh more than 3,000 pounds.

Yup, Flatheads, also called opeluses, primarily will only bite on live bait. They are truly very good eating. Notice it does not have a split tail, it is an ancient breed.Check out my profile page, I know a thing or two about catfish and have read some mighty ignorant remarks on this thread.

it looks as if the photo was manipulated to make the fish look much bigger

That's my thought too....You got to figure that guy is around 200 lbs. himself and that fish is easily 4 or 5 times bigger.......

Catfish out of clean Clearwater lakes are very tasty, much better than farm raised.

Catfish are no more bottom feeders than trout are. Channel cats are often caught by walleye fishermen using artificial lures in the Great Lakes, spinners work especially well.

Channel cats will hit the same lures trout and walleyes do.

I've caught channels on lures, too. But always when I was fishing for something else. But, if you're expressly fishing for channels, I can't imagine you'd do it with an artificial lure.

On the Great Lakes they fish for catfish either with live bait like minnows, or artificial lures like spinners.
