Box Office: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Explodes With Record-Breaking $81.7 Million

“Fifty Shades of Grey” sizzled at the box office, setting new records for the highest grossing Presidents Day Weekend opener of all time and ranking among the biggest R-rated debuts in history.

The erotic drama performed like a comic book movie, albeit one with much naughtier costumes, picking up $81.7 million from 3,646 locations over the three-day period. That easily trumped the holiday’s previous record-holder, the 2010 debut of the romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day,” which kicked off with $56.3 million.

This is the take many are beginning to discuss. Perhaps the last two generations of American women raised on Sex in the City, Girls and Vagina Monolouges has begun having second thoughts about what they really, really want from men.
Just maybe these same women who finally ‘have it all’ miss being treated like ladies, like something precious and beautiful who is at her best, when serving the needs of her man, and her family. The road to perpetual hedonism is short dark and besotted with trap doors of selfish behavior.

The original ‘women’s movement’ has had some value and benefit; but in my experience and observation, its extremes have just made most women miserable, unfulfilled, overworked, and frustrated.

(The few excerpts from this book that I’ve seen in reviews suggest really horrible writing; I don’t see how any thoughtful, educated woman could sit through reading it. And why would one want to view a film about sexually and emotionally dysfunctional people playing pretend games with one another?)

Wife and I saw it yesterday. I can honestly, open-mindedly and unbiasedly say it was awful. And I'm not talking about the sex scenes which were standard, by-the-book 'R'-rated fare, nothing we haven't seen in the past 30 years.

The film as a whole; acting, story, script, dialogue, characters was just awful.

And I'm not saying it was awful because, as a conservative I'm supposed to be offended by sexual content and licentiousness. I'm not. I've made no claims to being a Puritan.

And I'm not saying it's awful because, as a conservative, I'm supposed to loath Hollywood and their degradation of American culture. I really don't care.

I'm saying it was awful because it was flat-out awful. I've seen real porn films with better acting and dialogue. How much I thought this film sucked, where to begin?

The film will make a bunch of money this weekend, enough to finance the two planned sequels but I can't imagine many people leaving the theaters thinking they saw a great film.

Come Tuesday when everyone is back to work, the buzz on this isn't going to be good. I predict a huge drop-off next weekend.

For me, the absolute highlight of the movie was seeing the trailer for Hot Tub Time Machine 2.

It will be interesting to see what the carry through to next weekend will be. I will bet there were row of cat-owning single girl packs filling the theaters this weekend as kind of an anti-Valentine’s day event.

My best is that next weekend gets 30% of this weekend. It will be on iTunes by June.

Whoever timed the release of this movie is brilliant. There’s been all this buzz about American Sniper and how conservative movies are really making money. Every Liberal, Progressive, Democrat and Chicago ballet dancer was obligated to go to this movie just to prove that America wasn’t going for good movies. I’m surprised they didn’t run a movie entitled F**K OFF! I’LL EAT S**T IF I WANT TO!
