A woman is suing Target, alleging her son committed suicide after being forced to take part in a humiliating disciplinary event in front of co-workers and customers at the Pasadena store where he worked as a cashier.

Her son jumped to his death from the roof of the Courtyard Marriott in Monrovia on July 18, three days after he was required by Target management to take part in what the suit calls a “walk of shame.”
According to the complaint, police and store security met Graham Gentles immediately as he arrived for work, and, at the direction of two members of store management, was handcuffed and led before other store employees to an office.

He was questioned in the office, then later taken to the police station, according to the lawsuit. However, he was later released and never charged with any crime, according to the complaint.

“The walk of shame is a Target policy to purposely cause shame, embarrassment and emotional distress to any Target employee who is suspected of stealing from Target,” the suit states. “The policy consists of employees being arrested and paraded in handcuffs through the Target store in full view of co-workers and customers.”

I say not one red penny.
Last night, on Charlie Rose, Cyrus Vance JR, the New York County District Attorney, discussed, among other things, the “perp walk” practice, which he thinks is a bad idea. Says they’re not doing it in NY any more. Unfair to defendants, influences potential jurors, brings dishonor (and probably lawsuits) to the police, prosecutors, and courts.
So how does Target get away with such a controversial practice? Don’t they see the possible downside?
b) The kid quit his job.
c) Target refused to press charges, meaning the kid had no record.
Win-win for everyone. No reason to kill yourself.
It could end up with the PD getting sued rather than Target; Target might even have asked for a different method and got refused by the PD.
d) They never proved the kid stole

“The suicide heightens the sympathy value here, no matter what names we might call the deceased. Maybe the family will end up the better part of a million dollars richer.”
You are not kidding. The kid was, more than likely unbalanced before this but even if he was stealing this was NOT the way for any business to handle it. My goodness people have gone in a former job site, shot and killed everyone for less than this!! Who ever thought this policy up should be fired, this person put other employees in danger. What in heavens name were they thinking?

At Barnes & Noble where I worked a year ago because of financial troubles, thieves were photographed and their photos faxed to every store in the USA - along with their rap sheets.
Something doesn't sound right. He wasn't handcuffed at the direction of the store manager. He was handcuffed by police who had probable cause to cuff him.

The only feelings you exhibit is exhilaration when some kid is handcuffed and bullied.

Well, we are sure to get to the bottom of this story, eventually. I’m still doubting that Target could have such a stupid policy. And I speak as a kid who witnessed teachers creating a “dumb row” for slacker students back in the 1960s. I’ve often wonder how those kids got over their humiliation.

That’s horrible treatment .. and a good reason for me to continue never shopping at Target.
There’s a remedy .. you report them to the police, and then you fire them.
Case closed.
Awful, phony atmosphere. You only get sucked in to their awful restaurants when you’ve been on the road 30 hours and are desperate for food!
But these were presumably security photos of the thieves caught in the act. Different thing.
Maybe there was a disagreement between Target and the PD here, Target not having wished the PD to do it this way, and Target went for the face saving move of refusing to press charges. Which also would slide the onus onto the PD to a good probability.
Also, I would just like to point out to you that reasonable suspicion is the legal standard for arrest, not innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, which is the standard for conviction in a court of law after one has already been charged with a crime.
