Right now, about 4 hours until winter solstice!

The days get longer from here on out - even if they initially get colder!

Happy winter solstice 2014!

You don't celebrate the solstice. You observe it. As you would any other astronomical event.

Winter solstice occurs at precisely 6:03pm tonight ET.

After which, the sun will begin its slow northward trek back north, casting additional sunlight and longer days upon those 90% of us that happen to live north of the Equator.

True fact. Only 10% of the human population lives south of the Equator. For them, it is now mid-summer.

We get our turn six long months from now.

More than 5 days.

Actually the earliest sunset is usually Dec 7, two weeks before the solstice.

It varies by latitude. Probably also varies by height and where exactly you are in the time zone.

For example here in Seattle, the earliest sunset is at 4:18 But the sun sets at 4:18, according to Seattle Science Center, over the span of eleven days starting on December 6th and ending on December 16th.

A reasonable understanding of this is that the earliest sunset is in the middle of this whole range... or December 11th.

That’s in reply to those who do celebrate it.

AND ... I do “note” that an astronomical event occurs (I don’t “observe” it either, because of the usage of the word) ... just like I note another kind of natural event like a tornado ripped through a town or like a hurricane tore up a city, or an earthquake devastated some geographical area ... :-) ...
