Russia's War on Ukraine
Accuracy in Media ^ | Mar. 5 2014 | Victor Rud

Which of the following are statements by Vladimir Putin, his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov or other Kremlin spokesmen, and which are by Western media, academics, politicians and commentators: “Ukraine and Russia share deep historical and cultural roots,” “Russia traces its 1,000 year history to its beginnings in Kiev,” “Ukraine is really ‘Little Russia,’” “the Russian Orthodox Church originated in Kiev,” “thousand years of Russian Christianity,” “Ukraine is a part of Russia,” “Russia and Ukraine are not separate countries,” “Russia is a thousand-year-old state,” “Kievan Russia was the beginning of the modern Russia,” and “Ukrainians and Russians are brotherly nations?”

There is no distinction between who said any of the above. Each statement has been repeated, for a century in the United States and longer by the Kremlin. Such remarkable unanimity reflects either recognition of the same historical record, or the recognition of the same historical mythology. If the latter, how and why in American academe and politics is that mythology declared with such certitude by those who should know better, thereby facilitating a historical hologram?

The question, and answer, are central to conceptualizing not just an informed American “response,” but a policy, addressing Russia’s drive to completely suborn—and possibly annex—Ukraine, thereby directly and materially affecting American security and foreign policy interests.

A fascinating read. I was unaware of most of this. It does nothing to persuade me from the thought that the EU and the USA were trying to undermine Putin’s influence in Ukraine and that is what kicked off these tensions. The great Bumbler in Chief seems to stuff up everything he puts his grubby little fingers on. He seems to have taken a personal dislike to Putin as Bambi looks pathetic in comparison. If their was a conservative currently in the White House I wonder if there would have been a far stronger bond in the efforts to rid the world of terrorism.

Apparently you haven't been following what has been going on in Ukraine over the last 23 years. Obama didn't "kick off" these tensions. It's absurd to say that he did.

The people of Ukraine voted for independence from Russia in 1991. Just under 29 million of them voted for an independence. About 3 million voted to remain part of Russia. Since then an entire generation of Ukrainians has been born and they have no desire to be part of Russia.

Since 2000, Putin has been trying to undermine the will of the Ukrainian people.

Since Obama was elected, he has done nothing for Ukraine and the rest of Eastern Europe in its defense against Putin.

Yah, from this it sounds like Russia is actually Ukrainian. Instead of Little Russia, we’ve got Ukraine, and Big Dumb Ukraine.

Moscow should really subjugate themselves to Kiev.

But the bottom line in all this: Ukraine has 7 Million small arms. Happy Invading Ivan!

Please tell us who has invaded Russia?

Why should Putin have any influence in the sovereign nation of Ukraine?

Should not Ukrainians decide what happens in Ukraine?

Why should any Russian decide what happens is Ukraine?

Don’t think Americans want Putin to have any influence in the U.S. and are most certainly undermining his influence here. Do you therefore favor Putin orchestrating an invasion of the U.S. ?

By “kicked off these tensions” do mean the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and the killing of thousands of Ukrainians by Russians, and the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians who have lost their homes?

bump

Leninist Mad Vlad has declared Ukraine to be “New Russia” just as he said all those former Soviet slave states are actually “part of Russia”.

The Evil Empire is rising again.

Have a look for yourself and look beyond the newspapers. I do not support what Russia has done or is doing but if you cannot see that the EU had a vested interest in aiding to destabilize Ukraine and that they were aiding in undermining the previous regime then you are bonkers and not worth talking to. There were/are a lot of Ukrainians that were happy enough with the way things were previously or would lean even more towards Russia - nice to see you standing up for Obama and the EU on this one though (or am I just doing the same as you and exaggerating on your post).

Why should any Russian decide what happens is Ukraine?

Considering all the puppet regimes the West has set up over the recent past, this isn't the best line of attack.

If that were the case, Kiev would have fallen..and Russian wouldn’t need to be directly involved.

Nope, if we are talking about all the Ukraine, I think they are pro-Europe by a slight margin. It is not the case for the Southeast. They are majority pro-Russian for sure, even if most are too docile to resolutively express their affiliations and take arms. I guess Kiev attempts to reclaim this territory radicalized many of them. Anyway, their aspirations are certainly limited to their areas. None are planning to convert Lvov to their ways.

Sure if Pootypute counts the votes.

The rifle’s vote is harder to counterfeit than a ballot. Russia wouldn’t have stalled out if they had half of Ulrainian support.
