Dang — Mother Nature is harsh mistress.

Prayers for the families and a special prayer for the 5 month old child (even if it was 12 years ago). I am sure the pain continues to that day for that family.

Even black bears are getting into the “knockout game” now...

Their last conversation went like this....

HIKER: RUN!!!

PATEL: What are you doing? You can’t outrun a bear!

HIKER: I don’t have to outrun the bear. I just have to outrun YOU!

Never go hiking without a slow moving friend.

Having just watched a sickeningly saccharine “Georgia Outdoors” segment on the cute harmless black bear, thinking what a disservice that idiot producer (Sharon Collins) was doing to people who didn’t know much about bears, I’m wondering if this will register on the dim bulbs that believe nature is cute and cuddly.

This really isn’t funny. Being killed by a bear is no fun, and it’s only because the enviro-wackos have been encouraging the growth and even reintroduction of formerly vanished predators to inhabited areas that this is happening.

There have been predator killings not only in remote national parks now, but in heavily inhabited areas. Bears, mountain lions and even wolves have been permitted to return to these areas.

Two mistakes.... They shouldn’t have scattered and they should have been armed. Bear spray actually works quite well... if this is an area which was known to see occasional bears, taking spray along is a must.

Why didn’t they refer to it as a teenaged bear, or a youth bear?

That poor kid probably thought he was just going for an enjoyable hike in the woods with pals. He almost certainly was not planning on being confronted by bears. It is an unfortunate news story.

There are black bear in my part of the nation. My hiking companion choices are 6 rounds of .44 mag or 10 rounds of .45 acp. The .45 has the advantage of spare mags. Any thoughts?

And yes, I know all about filing off the front sights.

Yes, it is - I grew up in NYC and used to go to Jersey to hike. People think of New Jersey as chemical plants and Tony Soprano, but it actually has some very beautiful natural areas.

The problem is that in a lot of these places, even if you knew how to use a gun (which many people do not), you’re not allowed to be armed. I think there was one park that I read about where people were not even allowed to carry bear spray. Enviro-wackos on parade.

There are black bears in all parts of the country. Here in Florida, one will see a black bear from time to time crossing a road just outside of town.

Other than color, one distinguishing feature of the Florida black bear is that they don’t carry sun screen on their way to the beach...

The bear was unarmed. He was also (reportedly) about to enter college.
