The problem is that in a lot of these places, even if you knew how to use a gun (which many people do not), you’re not allowed to be armed. I think there was one park that I read about where people were not even allowed to carry bear spray. Enviro-wackos on parade.
I’m okay being armed, there’s a university owned 8,000 acre forest where I hike. There is a growing bear population there.

They probably thought they would hike up the side of a small mountain, have a snack at the peak, then return to drive home.
