We have a large bear population in SW PA. I spend a lot of time in the woods and have seen many bear without incident. A male will usually ignore you or move away. The female will usually give you a warning growl which means you are getting close to her young. Best thing to do is clear the area the way you came in. Getting in between a sow and her cubs is a dangerous thing. If cubs are seen mom is somewhere close. Go back the way you came or in the opposite direction of the cubs. I also carry a .44 revolver on my side.

They don’t want any more parts of you than you want of them. The hardest thing is determining which direction to go to clear the area. Remain calm, don’t run, walk briskly though.

You are missing the point. You wouldn't have time to shovel just shoot and shut up as in get the hell out of the area ASAP. This is NJ and the victim would probably be in danger of prosecution and incarceration for trying to defend themselves. You DO NOT WANT any LE involvement if at all possible. The case of the naive female CCW holder from PA that was traffic stopped in NJ and dutifully declared her weapon is a case in point. She is looking at hard jail time and loss of her kids for trying to be a good citizen

I did not miss your point.
New Jersey would be a very tough place for this to happen.
People are getting attacked by wild animals (in the suburbs) and there is apparently nothing they can lawfully do about it under the present absurd laws.

Lone bears hunting people as a source of food are a greater cause of deadly maulings and related predatory attempts ... than surprising a mother bear with cubs

Olga Moskalyova, 19, gave an horrific hour-long running commentary on her own death in three separate calls ..

‘Mum, the bear is eating me!’: Frantic final phone calls of woman, 19, eaten alive by brown bear.

I remember the case.

The mother had two of her children in the yard, one in a stroller.

When she saw the bear she grabbed the child nearest to her and took the baby to safety. She ran out to the second child in the stroller, but the bear had already grabbed the baby.

People think you're a swell guy if you take elderly folks hiking.

It's a win-win! ;^)

Sometimes you gets the bear, sometimes the bear gets you!

“”A modified SSS probably would be better.”

SSS, as in shoot, shovel, and shut-up about a crazed suburban bear that needed to be dispatched for safety?”

Considering we are discussing life in ‘Joisey’, well - existance in Joisey, perhaps Shoot, Skin, Split would have been a better idea.

I agree the laws are absurd and a person cannot lawfully defend themselves in those circumstances. If it comes down to living and surviving or breaking the law I will opt for living and surviving. No sane person would allow themselves to be killed because some bureaucrat says you have to die because the law says so. Sort of a judged by 12 rather than carried by 6 situation.

Concur that protecting oneself from death or grievous injury far outweighs the feelings of a bureaucrat. One must use judgement in determining how to protect oneself.

The RailRoad Police on “Hell on Wheels” took on a bear and won.

The Indians looked upon him as some kind of ‘God’.

From his reactions etc and post fight behavior, I would venture to say the Bear was Rabid.

Am sure in that era rabies shots were not all that handy.

Rather than take the Rabies shots in the stomach, I figure if I contact rabies, I will make up a list of people I want to bite.

Yes Black Bears are unpredictable. We never go in the woods without a gun ever. Its that one in a thousand that doesn’t run.

The report said a Black Bear was found on the scene and killed so what they are not telling you it that it was eating the guy for lunch. Scary.

I don’t know if they still do but the rangers up on Black Rock Mountain in Rabun County used to carry baseball bats to hit bears on the snout if they got aggressive.

Tough to hike with a 12 ga. I may have to deliver the one ounce at the rate of 240 grains at a time.

I carry Bear Spray for the thugs in the hood. I wonder what to carry for the actual bears?
