Dang — Mother Nature is harsh mistress.
Prayers for the families and a special prayer for the 5 month old child (even if it was 12 years ago). I am sure the pain continues to that day for that family.

Their last conversation went like this....
HIKER: RUN!!!
PATEL: What are you doing? You can’t outrun a bear!
HIKER: I don’t have to outrun the bear. I just have to outrun YOU!

Two mistakes.... They shouldn’t have scattered and they should have been armed. Bear spray actually works quite well... if this is an area which was known to see occasional bears, taking spray along is a must.

There are black bear in my part of the nation. My hiking companion choices are 6 rounds of .44 mag or 10 rounds of .45 acp. The .45 has the advantage of spare mags. Any thoughts?
And yes, I know all about filing off the front sights.

They should have stayed together because the larger numbers of people would cause the bear to think twice about attacking.

I recently told a friend that I ALWAYS carry a Ruger SP101 .357 magnum when I go fishing in black bear country.
He responded, “black bears rarely attack humans.”
I said, “Then the bears have nothing to worry about.”

Was the black bear a 290lb unarmed teen who just swiped some honey?

My niece and nephew-in-law (who's a damn Jets and Mets fan) live in a semi-rural area of Western Massachusetts. They say they see bears often...big ones and little ones.
Yikes!

As others have said, this young man could not have been expecting any problems with bears. In West Milford, he couldn't have been more than a couple miles from a strip mall and car dealerships. It's hardly back country. It's a suburban area with some miles of state park intertwined.
Most people know there are bears around, but they generally just eat from garbage cans and get chased up trees by cats.

Put a normal boy in the woods and the first thing they’ll do is pick up a stick. There’s a reason for that.

So based on the victim’s name, we can assume the bear liked Indian food.

I grew up in the area, hiked through much of it especially the Appalachian Trail. Back then bears were seldom mentioned more than the usual “stay away from the cubs”. Apparently things have changed. Bear spray should be a minimum deterrent and the human population should be aware.
Perhaps the population is aware of the threat, but the victim is an Indian immigrant, more aware of tigers at home than bears here.
