[Vanity] "Mulaney" ... Really? An Astonishingly Laughless "Seinfeld"
FOX ^ | 9/20/14 | FOX

Posted on 09/20/2014 8:47:19 PM PDT by JennysCool

Holy cow! After the football game, FOX showed a preview of their new sitcom "Mulaney" ... named for the stand-up comic who stars. Never have I seen this kind of preview that had not ONE laugh. Not ONE. And the set-up is a blatant "Seinfeld" rip-off. Completely fake interaction amongst the characters. WHAT a disaster. Very sorry Martin Short is peripherally involved here. HE's the real deal. This show looks bad on so many levels.

Went to Philipe’s in Los Angeles with my family about a decade ago. I looked up and a few tables over was Louis Nye.

I hadn’t seen the guy in at least 30 years. (since I had been in my early teens) I recognized him immediately. I went over and said hi. He had been out of mainstream show business for decades. I thought he’d get a kick out of a fan remembering him and coming over to acknowledge him.

He did.

I’d only seen him in bit parts in 1940s and early 50s movies. He was always a whiner sad sack. It was hilarious the way he used to portray it on film.

You mentioned not remembering past generations of actors, and that popped into my mind. I’ve never forgotten it. Him either for that matter. He served up some great laughs to me (and other members of the public) about half a century ago.

I appreciate his stand up too, but it’s probably more of the effect I mentioned in an earlier post.

If you like someone, you sometimes open yourself up to laughter easier than if someone else were delivering the lines. You didn’t see him that way, so it just wasn’t funny to you. We all see humor a bit different. I understand where you’re coming from.

Glad you could enjoy the show at least.

I do remember him. How neat to get to meet him in person.

You’re painting with a pretty broad brush.

Don’t misunderstand me. I like Seinfeld’s rather low-key humor. But his show is funnier than he is by himself, in my opinion. But then, I haven’t actually seen his stand-up for many years, I remember him turning up on a few shows prior to his sitcom but that has to be a long time ago. His stand-up routine at the beginning or end of his sit-com was perhaps intentionally lame.

The show itself, though, some very good writing and comedic acting.

I’m probably one of the few Americans that didn’t fall in love with M.A.S.H. I was never tempted to watch it, well for the most part. I have watched a few shows in reruns and enjoyed them.

Oh my -—, I got so tired of hearing the name Alan Alda at one point. It was like he was a god or something. I’m sure he’s a decent person and a good actor, they just laid it on so thick.

One night I went to Chuck’s steakhouse in Westwood, California. My date and I were sitting there having dinner, and Alda and a woman walked in and were seated right next to us.

I ate dinner less than five feet from the guy.

Generally speaking, if someone is big in the day, I don’t bother them. I figure they appreciate their privacy. I’m not generally the sort to approach someone like that.

The Nye situation I mentioned above is way out of Character for me.

Did you happen to catch “The Mysteries of Laura” the other night? New cop show starring Debra Messing.... it was horrible. She is in the process of divorcing her husband and they have two of the worst behaved children ever shown on television....I guess they are trying to make her appear human in the role, but it is too over the top

What I can’t explain, is why it affected me that way.

I guess it brought back that innocent time in my life, and how I used to really laugh at him back then.

It was neat. Thanks.

Parks and Rec was funny the first couple of seasons - the last one or two were just bad. Some very funny characters there.... like “little Sabastian”

Have either of you watched The Goldbergs? It is a great family type comedy based on the 80’s. Adam Goldberg had a video camera as a kid and has based this show on his old film clips of his family. The interaction with the family, plus the values we had in the 80’s are great. At the end of each episode they show a real clip from his childhood - it is very funny.

Are there kids living alone (A perv nation staple), go on overnight trips together without adults? Things like that?

That’s okay Marron. I understand. Look, there are comedians out there today that can’t say one single thing to make me laugh. Others are rolling in the isles. I just don’t get them.

For one thing, I’m not into crude. Back in the 90s it got to the point where vulgarity was a prerequisite for comedians. I quit going to comedy clubs.

The last comedy club evening I attended, the acts were great until about midnight. We’re talking some hilarious acts. We were in the front row. At one point about 11:00, this female comedian unloaded a glass of water on me. Hey, I just took it and laughed. I was soaked. She was funny, and you more or less ask for it sitting in the front row of a comedy club. They love to focus on ya.

About 11:30 a guy came on and starting picking on a very attractive white woman. He was black. By the time he was done he was insulting her husband, her children, and any other family members, (not present, she was out with friends). He also proceeded to address regions of her crotch, and anything else that came to mind. It was very vicious.

After him came the real racists came out. Honestly, it was the last comedy club night for me. When we got up to leave, there wasn’t a white person in the place. They had all left and the audience was to a man and woman, black.

I actually felt unsafe leaving the place. I was with my wife, and felt bad for placing her in that situation.

I don’t get why it has to be that way. The most prominent racists I have ever seen, have been black.

I think the seasons of M*A*S*H prior to Wayne Rogers and McLean Stevenson's departure are some of the most brilliant comedy ever on American TV. But your mileage may vary.

In #40 I used one anime as an example and that’s a “broad brush”?
