Let’s Stop Idealizing the Home-Cooked Family Dinner
Slate ^ | September 3, 2014 | Amanda Marcotte

The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country's burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that cooking puts on people, particularly women, may not be worth the trade-off.

Indeed. I do most of the cooking in my house. I get home earlier from work than my wife but even so I love to cook. I do chicken of all kinds, pork chops, some Italian, I love to grill just about everything and my roast beef dinner is to die for,if I may say so and I do. I've got six other siblings with their wives and husbands and their kids,, in-laws, step-son and his wife and their kids(my grandkids) friends etc. over at various times during the year, they reciprocate. It's great. As Judy Collins sings "Cooking where there's good love/is never any chore''. Whoever wrote this article had a mother who fed them with a sling shot.

This is all good. The Progs won't cook, will eat out and will die younger.

We will cook good food at home, eat well and live longer.

This is the same loony left which equates casual hook-up sex with marital relations and a normal, loving family relationship with patriarchal oppression.

My parents both worked from the time I was in 4th grade. But we still managed to eat the family meal together in the evening most of the time.

Mom ate many cold meals because she used that time to read to the family. They were great books which we kids took a turn selecting, biographies of great Americans, The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom and others.

We didn't leave the table until the chapter was finished. We also took a turn reading (and having cold supper) to give Mom an occasional break.

The results were worth it. Every one of us went on to higher education degrees, including the graduate level and even one PhD. Best of all, not one of our brood of six grew up to be a drug addicted lazy slackard or a bed-wetting liberal. But I repeat myself.

My wife and I did the same with our brood, even though we didn't do it quite as consistently or as often as my parents did. We got the same rewarding results.

More Marxist agenda driven science. Did they come to their conclusions before or after they collected the data?

same here, Every night we all sit down and eat dinner.

3 kids, myself and wife and we all learn what the kids did today and how al our days went.

My 16 year old loves to cook now and this article is about themselves who are just feminazis and hates the role of women who are to like them

Let's face it. This is another assault on "white privilege."

It's about tearing down another family value that is held dear in nuclear families, especially multi-generational families where everyone gets together at the end of the day and talks about the day's travails.

The problem is that today's minority families don't exist anymore. Single mothers, multiple father siblings, no work ethic, all contribute to the decline of certain blocks of people.

So the only thing left is to mock and deride those true families that do stay together, and dine together.

Low-income mothers often have erratic work schedules, making it impossible to have set meal times. Even for middle-class working mothers who are able to be home by 6 p.m., trying to cook a meal while children are demanding attention and other chores need doing becomes overwhelming. The problem is not the home cooked meal but rabid Feminism and "Women's Liberation" that forced women out of the home and into the workforce, often without a husband to support her otherwise. It is time to return to the norm of no sex outside of marriage, permanently married spouses, working fathers and stay at home mothers. As conservatives, it is time that we stop being ashamed to proclaim publicly that this should be the norm for society.

Another attack on the family.

Dinner is often when everyone meets after a busy day. It is an important family social social activity.

Families have been doing it for thousands of years. Millions of years if you believe in evolution.

HUH it’s a damn sight cheaper than eating junk food every night.

When I see these parents going to Publix or another store to get their pre made food makes me think they are just pure lazy, and can’t be bothered to be a family , a close family and talk to each other

We cook every night even though our boys are all grown and out of the house. My wife and I spend much of our time together in the kitchen. On the weekends my grill always has some kind of dead animal cooking on it.

We should all eat nothing but the state supplied gruel and we should be thankful for it.
That some people know how to cook is UNFAIR to those who don't.

One of the communist goals is to destroy the family unit which society is built upon. Doesn't this look painful?
