How RAK, UAQ police saved the day
A 22-year-old Emirati woman was saved by police after her car was stuck in cruise control at 120kmph while she was heading from Sharjah to Ras Al Khaimah.
Police risked their lives when they drove their vehicle in front of Aysha Hassan and told her to bang her car in the rear of their vehicle to slow it down.
The frightened Aysha was reluctant to this but the trick worked and her car stopped. The woman's brakes stopped working near the National Paints Bridge in Sharjah.
She phoned Umm Al Quwain police, who tried to calm her down before sending patrols to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, where she was heading.
One of them phoned me again and told me that he would drive in front of me while another police car was behind me, she said.
The policeman then told me he would slow down so my car will bang into his vehicle. I was scared and tried to dodge his vehicle but I had no choice. I hit the police vehicle and may car came to a standstill.
She said traffic police from Umm Al Quwain, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah joined hands to calm her down through the plight and save her life.
She was screaming. She was in a bad psychological state but we tried our best to calm her down before acting to stop her car, said Major Sultan bin Youkha, acting director of Umm Al Quwain traffic police.
I bought a brand new air-mobile
It was custom made, twas a Flight De Ville
With a pow'ful motor and some hideaway wings
Push in on the button and you can hear her sing
CHORUS:
Now you can't catch me, baby you can't catch me
'Cause if you get too close, you know I'm gone like a cool breeze
New Jersey Turnpike in the wee wee hours
I was rollin' slowly 'cause of drizzlin' showers
Here come a flat-top, he was movin' up with me
Then come wavin' by me in a little' old souped-up jitney
I put my foot in my tank and I begin to roll
Moanin' siren, 'twas the state patrol
So I let out my wings and then I blew my horn
Bye bye New Jersey, I become airborne
Now you can't catch me, no, baby you can't catch me
'Cause if you get too close, you know I'm gone like a cool breeze
Flyin' with my baby last Saturday night
Not a gray cloud floatin' in sight
Big full moon shinin' up above
Cuddle up honey, be my love
Sweetest little thing I've ever seen
I'm gonna name you Maybelline
Flyin' on the beam, set on flight control
Radio tuned to rock 'n' roll
Two, three hours passed us by
Altitude dropped to 5:05
Fuel consumption way too fast
Let's get on home before we run out of gas
Now you can't catch me, no baby, you can't catch me
'Cause if you get too close, you know I'm gone like a cool breeze
120kmph?? 120,000 mph is pretty fast! Mohammad needs a better editor.
“I do know that my car when stuck in very little mud will basically shut down”
That sounds like automatic traction control taking over on you.
I ran into that one icy night trying to spin a fire engine around on an icy road to prevent sliding down a hill. I finally got it done.
When you are in that situation, you are supposed to turn off automatic traction control.
U.A.E. is very westernized. Also, 120 kph is 75 mph.
No brakes?
“blonde joke”
Cop: “When you hit 110 mph, what gear were you in darlin’?
Blonde: “Uh, Reebok?”
Ignition switch to off, muscle on the wheel and brakes. Problem solved in like 30 seconds.
Others advised u can turn the motor off running down the road but u can’t remove the key which means you can’t lock the steering wheel.
So, from, others comments, I now understand that the lady running 120mph indeed COULD HAVE simply turned the motor off using the key resulting in the car coasting to a stop.
Yes, it’s very frustrating! I had to call a wrecker to tow me ten feet out of very little mud on an interstate service road in pouring down rain.
Not too many years ago I could have easily gotten out without the wrecker!
Thanks!
I appreciate the info.
There used to be a thingy called a key in most cars...
There is also a off switch for the cruise control, or at least there once was...
All that failing, there used to be a gear shift..
I dunno......???
Just remember, the two features (shift lock and ignition lock) only apply to an automatic. For example, you could turn the key off and remove it (thus locking your steering) on a manual. We don’t know what that lady was driving. But the story is very sketchy. Why did her car, by bumping into the back of the police mans car, come to a standstill?
Don’t have time to read all the responses, but wish these cops would be invited to the White House.
And if that ain’t enough, in today’s automatics you have to have the key turned to at least the first detent AND have your foot on the brake to the move gear selector out of park.
Welp, I went to the article and found “related articles”. It would appear there have been several similar occurrences on the roads around Dubai involving Land Cruisers. They are having total electronic failures. Another such incident:
Sharjah police saved an Emirati driver whose car developed a brake failure while travelling at 140 kph on the motorway towards the northern city without having to bang their patrol cars into his vehicle, newspapers reported on Saturday.
Police said simple instructions given to the driver by phone helped him bring his car brakes back to work and stop the vehicle without any accident.
Lt Hassan Al Dahouri, who supervised the operation, said the driver was told to flash his car hazard light, fasten his seat belt and put the gear into neutral (N) position.
We told him to hold the wheel tight we then asked him to turn the engine off and back on at the same time after he did this, the car brake started to function and returned to normal, allowing him to control and stop the car.
He said the unnamed motorist, who was driving on Mlaiha road towards Sharjah, emerged out of the car unscathed after implementing police instructions to the letter.
Must be the jinn - definitely the jinn.
I guess they don’t call ‘em Land Cruisers for nothin.
Or soccer mom demolition derby at Target
Or at my youngest grammar school at 330 PM
God love em....they just freak in cars
