If I only could have one rifle, it certainly would not be a .22

I have this. Made by Henry. I keep it in my backpack with all the other needfuls.

Rossi Matched Pair .308 and 12 ga.

Walmart price when bought was $109 or so. Mine are wood stocked oldies.

Considered the take down AR/Henry and Marlin versions at the time but considered reloading more important than .22 cal lightness. With barrel mount scope rail zero remains same when swapping barrels which takes no time at all. Also fits tennis racquet bag etc as well as fitting pack frame.

Shoots better than it should. Dead simple to operate for beginners so they can focus on shooting skills instead of worrying about controls. I know I can fabricate fire controls with hand tools in long term if need be.

If buying today I would opt for .223/12ga with synthetic stock. Ugly, yep. Would I rather have something snazzier? Yep and do have them, but in ulimate bug out run for your life end of the world situation it works. Besides opportunities for field upgrade will abound. ;>)

.223 first choice for me. Good for most game bigger than birds sufficient for 2 legged problems, and the ammo is available in quantities.

My dad bought one of those Charter Arms rifles for me when I was a young teen. It would not cycle. The spring guide was a plastic washer with two rods. It always jammed. Being the machinist and self taught engineer that he was, he used a steel washer and drilled and tapped for two steel spring guides. Shoots like a charm, still have it!
Not my bug out rifle though, Obummer has reduced the .22 ammo supply!

I'd prefer a Kreighoff Drilling, and you can get a .22 LR insert for the shotgun barrel.

Why a .22 insert, won’t a 12 ga shoot a .50 cal with pretty good accuracy?

Bought one of those for my kids to teach them to shoot. Daughter liked the 410 for skeet. She has graduated to my AR, .357 and 45.

Son hasn’t really clicked on shooting, unless it’s the 10/22 with a red dot and the splatter targets. Will see. He’s 13. I didn’t snap into it until I was around 14/15.

Now it’s mine for a pack rifle if needed. Nice little unit

Have coveted drillings for a long time.

They are pricey though.

She is one hell of a woman. Saw a scene where she nailed a wolfe at a lope at over 300 yards with that Communist rifle.

That takedown is really sweet. I topped mine with a 4 power Nikon and some Hi Viz replacement sights. The case holds 4 of those Ruger 25 round magazines and 500 rounds of extra ammo. There’s plenty of room left in the case for other useful stuff.

It all fits right in the spare tire compartment of my truck. Shoots like a dream.

We like our 10-22 also but if its down to one rifle give me the AR 15. All round better for defense and hunting.

All my rifles are my "favorite".

Keeping only one? Not the AR, but the AK, hands down. For several reasons.

As regards hunting, I imagine in a real collapse the game that requires more than 22LR will be hunted to near extinction in a short time. We'll all be scrounging for squirrels, rabbits and the like.
