I have one that I got back in the '80s. It's been pretty solid for me. I won't ever get rid of it.

What’s on her chin? The rifle looks like a Mauser ... but I could be wrong ...

If you are looking for a takedown model. The Ruger 10/22 takedown is fine tool.

We like our 10-22 also but if its down to one rifle give me the AR 15. All round better for defense and hunting.

It was identified on an earlier thread as a Mosin Nagant. Not sure about her chin.

The fact that respondents to this thread are leaning toward .22 gives you a clue to the shortage of that ammo.

Some versions of that gun had plastic barrels with a metal liner, IIRC.

The magazine is so cheezily designed/produced, with so many sharp edges that with a bit of sharpening, it could also be used as a crude razor.

But, the mags are interchangeable with a pistol of similar design, so I just try to round off the edges.

It's a Mosin-Nagant bolt ...

Define "survival".

Is it surviving after the SHTF and the economy tanks?

Or is it for defense against the BLM and DHS goons?

Or is it for surviving after a plane crash flying into remote Canada on a fishing trip?

Or is it for surviving after an EMP attack?

My answer will vary depending on the circumstances. In any event, a .22 is a light and versatile weapon with light and affordable ammo. (Maybe that's why the ammo is so hard to find right now...)
