A stunning 77.6 percent of NYC public-high-school graduates who entered CUNY community colleges as freshmen last fall needed remediation in math, reading or writing, new data show.
Despite their high-school diplomas, the grads failed CUNY admission tests in one or more of the key subjects, officials told The Post.

Everyone is shoved toward college, even if they are ill-suited to pursue a college degree. It's as if there is something shameful about working in a trade.
So hearing of this outrageously low college readiness is, sadly, soooo not a surprise to me.
these people are being robbed and set up to fail. they are not ready for college courses or passing classes.
This problem has been around several decades. Most people would generally admit that college classes for year one....are geared to really be 12th grade introduction situations.
Basically, by the menu system we’ve run....you’ve got kids motivated and ready to move onto tougher requirements by the 10th grade, and instead....we waste a lot of the remaining two years just trying help the remaining one/third of the class get to the bare minimum.

I’m hearing stories about college freshman English teachers seeing kids who write the way they text on cellphones, that appears to be their language.....
Ten minutes into the meeting two black women entered the conference room talking loudly and laughing. The speaker, who was the head charge nurse stopped in mid sentence and called security to escort the two out of the meeting and off the property. And though the latecomers angrily protested they were removed. It was a lesson that they should have been taught long before then. And it's so simple. Being late is rude and unprofessional. And it can cost you a well paying job.
One would think so, but then, who is going to teach them? Their "parents" know nothing of civil behavior, their "teachers" have no time for such niceties.
This is a good illustration of the meaning of underclass.
And if someone did try to teach them, they would scream racism.
You should have seen the interviews we went through, including these so-called Ivy League grads. The simple written test to differentiate between “lose” and “loose”, most of the time it was a disaster.
Colleges, especially community ones, don’t have the highest standards from all the stuff we read here, basic literacy should at least be expected
On an unrelated note, what are we going to do about the massive college debt burden on young people who can’t earn enough to pay off their debts? [And I’ll bet 95% of liberals don’t see any relationship between people who are not college-ready borrowing for college and the same people four years later having trouble paying those debts.]

Not to worry! Those are the ones being trained to be professional athletes or politicians who represent NY. Give ‘em a break!

Veteran teachers, in conversations with other veteran teachers, almost universally ridicule and condemn Commie Core. It's not teaching; it's handing out readings with associated questions to groups of 4, while the teacher stands off to the side. You don't get to emphasize, quantify, clarify, anticipate what the kids are sure not to understand, stress as to what's most important to know, etc. In other words, teach.
As a matter of fact, that’s exactly what happens in many cases. If a kid offers an incorrect answer and I tell them, “Sorry, that’s a great answer, but for a different question,” the first thing out of their mouths is, “You don’t like my answer because I’m black.” This is a knee-jerk excuse line they learned from the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. All of their errors are only errors because of their race. What a load of hooey, and what a horrible way to set them up for life excusing everything they do because of race.
Understanding the difference certainly would be a massive undertaking for many posters on Free Republic, who invariably use "loose" when "lose" is called for.
What really grates on me is the misuse of ‘there’ when it should be ‘their’.
“I parked my car in there garage”
“I left my purse at there house”
I see this on facebook all the time. It’s simply mind- blowing.
I have seen ‘gots’ and ‘worser’ on FB as well.
Yes, the English language is abused terribly by some posters. I would wonder how they got through high school, but then I think of some of the people I encountered in high school and no longer wonder.
Another two words that one usually sees written correctly only in newspapers, books, and magazines are “its” and “it’s.” So many people apparently do not understand that English is an irregular language and therefore, one ALWAYS can make a noun possessive by placing an apostrophe and “s” at the end; therefore, they think that “it” is made possessive by such a process. But that would be wrong. The possessive tense is “its” and “it’s” is a contraction of “it” and “is” (see my tagline...which may be too subtle for many to understand).
Why almost every poster thinks that putting an apostrophe and then an “s” makes nouns plural is also a mystery. We end up with absurdities such as “1950’s,” “the Smith’s,” and so forth.
Oh, well. It’s a losing battle.
I once had a conversation with a inner city youth where they could not comprehend anything I said unless I pluralized certain worlds, like gots, mines, etc. it was surreal.
I guess they don’t mind being ignorant.
