I was prompted to post this asteroid database with over 600,000 asteroids that are plotted on this amazing visualization program in response to viewing sunkenciv's repost of the article originally posted February, 26, 2011 by LibWhacker.

Free Republic:October 27, 2013:Record number of Near Earth Asteroids Discovered

Asterank is a scientific and economic database of over 600,000 asteroids. We've collected, computed, or inferred important data such as
asteroid mass and composition from multiple scientific sources. With this information, we estimate the costs and rewards of mining asteroids.

Details on orbits and basic physical parameters are mostly sourced from JPL data. Composition data is less well known, so we compute generalizations based on spectral classification and size. Our calculations incorporate conclusions from multiple scientific publications in addition to cross-referencing known meteorite data.

So let's say you go there, mine it, profit a few trillion, and then have to pay the taxman....

No wonder people are more content to sit in the back yard with a beer and look at the sky, rather than go there.

OK, I claim all of those asteroids. Yeah, now you all are wishing you’d have thought of that, aren’t you? Mine mine mine men mine mine mine. Send me a check for five dollars and I’ll let you have one of my asteroids. But you won’t get the mineral rights! Hah!
