I want to overlay a photo on another photo. Gimp is too complicated. I'm pretty good with powerpoint but want to do more. I have a neat picture of an old schoolhouse that is black and white, actually "sepia" and want to overlay a color photo into it. You guys are really great doing stuff like that so any help appreciated, thanks.
Irfanview might do it.
GIMP -Gnu Image Manipulation Program. Just do a websearch on “Gimp Download”
Will this online editor work for you? http://pixlr.com/editor/

Pixia is the one I used before I finally knuckled down and learned Gimp (best time I ever spent, as I now use it for almost everything photo related). You need one that uses layers, though, and I don’t remember if Pixia does that...
PhotoScape? I’ve been using it for a couple of years. I don’t a lot of retouching and blatant editing, but it handles albums, sizing, and all the generally accepted photo editing functions.
Thanks FReepers!
I like PaintDotNet. It’s a free download that has a lot of capabilities without getting too complicated.
Cool, I think the key is “layers”. When I figure out that and get a decent rendition, I’ll post it and have you guys look at it. It’s a nice photo we took coming back from the Blues festival at Sun Banks in central Wa.
What’s wrong with the GIMP? It would be my first choice for what you describe.
Yes, PaintDotNet does layers.
You can copy the sepia photo into one layer and the color photo into another. You can set transparency levels on the layers individually for some interesting effects. (When you save the final image as a jpeg photo, the layers are merged into the file that’s generated.)
Actually, I was using Gimp a lot during my university days because I could not afford Photoshop. Now I use bittorrent/Pirate Bay to download Photo..er, I mean, Gimp is really good. It saved me a lot.
Try Google’s Picasa. It actually has the Sepia tone you’ll like. I hate suggesting anything Google because it’s in cahoots with the odumbo gubmint’ but it’s wroth a shot. the reason why we like it is because it has a nice front end feature which straightens pictures faster than Photoshop.
I think irfanview will set you up. I think it has layers and you can set the transparency of the layer.
I was a moderator for an anime website run by my classmate and most kids use Gimp to make their own banners using their favorite anime characters. if 10 year old kids who watch Bleach and Naruto could grasp it, why can’t older dudes?
Great! also to max americana I have Picasa which I use only to download photos from our camera then switch to the minolta editor to re-size and adjust contrast/brightness etc. Really great help. Thanks all!
Also note that it has a “layer-based image editor”.
Yes, a great editor and doing some minor almost CAD like graphics. and "Infranview" to view them. infranview is a pain to edit in, but has some functionality.
