He was hundreds of miles from civilisation, lost in the burning heat of the desert.

Second World War Flight Sergeant Dennis Copping took what little he could from the RAF Kittyhawk he had just crash-landed, then wandered into the emptiness.

From that day in June 1942 the mystery of what happened to the dentist’s son from Southend was lost, in every sense, in the sands of time.

They found a bunch of in-crate Spitfires in Burma. Those might even be airworthy.

This is still cool, or as cool as you can be in the desert.

I hope all the Spitfires become fully operational and even this Warhawk is also restored, better yet they find the pilots remains.

I bought a high end Whites metal detector two months ago, the goal was to find small gold nuggets in Alaska, but you never know what with easy to get satellite pics on your smartphones now.

Its a shame it came down on such a rotten rock layer, otherwise the engine would still be intact.

Apparently th Spitfires were in packing creates, meaning they were oiled and stuff. There was probably very little decay/rusting.
