Archaeologists Puzzle Over Opulent Prehistoric Burial Find
Spiegel Online ^ | 01 July 2011 | Matthias Schulz

When archeologists recently excavated a 3,800-year-old palace near the eastern German city of Weimar, they discovered about 100 valuable weapons buried next to a massive structure. Now they are puzzling over how an ancient chieftain buried nearby became so rich.

In 1877, when archeology was still in its infancy, art professor Friedrich Klopfleisch climbed an almost nine-meter (20-foot) mound of earth in Leubingen, a district in the eastern German state of Thuringia lying near a range of hills in eastern Germany known as the Kyffhäuser. He was there to "kettle" the hill, which entailed having workers dig a hole from the top of the burial mound into the burial chamber below.

When they finally arrived at the burial chamber, everything lay untouched: There were the remains of a man, shiny gold cloak pins, precious tools, a dagger, a pot for food or drink near the man's feet, and the skeleton of a child lying across his lap.

The "prince" of Leubingen was clearly a member of the elite. Farmers who had little to eat themselves had piled up at least 3,000 cubic meters (106,000 cubic feet) of earth to fashion the burial mound. They had also built a tent-shaped vault out of oak beams and covered it with a mound of stones, as if he had been a pharaoh.

For years, scholars have puzzled over the source of the prince's power. But Thuringia's state office of historical preservation has now come a step closer to solving the mystery. Agency archeologists used heavy machinery to excavate 25 hectares (62 acres) of ground in the mound's immediate surroundings, exposing a buried infrastructure.

“Now they are puzzling over how an ancient chieftain buried nearby became so rich. “

Well, the Euro was worth a lot more back then.

I guess you can take it with you for awhile. Then as now, not much difference between organized crime and government.

From the last sentence:

In the end, a child followed him into the grave as a bloody sacrifice. The child was only about 10.

your probably right.
but, it could be his child,
and perhaps they both died of pneumonia one winter or something.
some ancient cultures loved and cared for their children.

(but again, it probably was a slave or something.)

IMO that no one robbed it seems significant to me. I mean either he was well respected or he had lot of bodyguards on retainer for his afterlife journey that the grave remained undisturbed.

For that type of burial a lot of people knew what was there so why not go get it if everyone was as poor as the author portrayed in the story?

again, since the libs took over colleges, i see it corrupting a lot of science. like the “noble savage” stuff they spout. how they lived as one with nature, and couldn’t possibly have caused extinctions of large animals, all over the world, shortly after humans appeared.
...libs also put their own motives in things, especiallly religious. (and you know how they hate all symbols of violence, like... an ANVIL !!! that was the prehistoric gun !!!

“Another item found in his tomb, a small anvil, suggests that the man had something to do with metallurgy. It is possible that he was a blacksmith himself. But, either way, it is clear that he controlled others through the use of force. “

...so again, the child may have been sacrificed. but i’d like to see actual evidence, instead of a lib archaeologist’s opinion, especially after that “anvil” nonsense.

Those greedy Weimar Republicans.

great point! ...again, it sounds very similar to the modern class warfare garbage, about how the wage disparities are so great...
...i liked the old days, when people kept their science separate from their politics.

and the AGW hoax is the ultimate example. we pay more for electricity etc. because the EPA is fighting global warming which doesn’t exist (it’s been cooling since at least 2003 - “hide the decline”) and which if it did exist, wasn’t caused by CO2 (it was MUCH higher, just 80 years ago), and yet we are told everything short of zebras losing their stripes to global warming.
yet they have to drop hundreds of rural sites, and put urban ones on asphalt in urban heat islands, and actually REDUCE temperatures in 100 year old records,
to create a non-existent global warming slope.
...it is the greatest most costly hoax in human history.

You folks just don't understand the concepts. The 'prince' was just making sure that the 'merchants' paid 'their fair share' and that the princes workers had 'good jobs' with 'good benefits'. The workers showed their appreciation by keeping the prince in power and giving him an appropriate burial.

Not much has changed has it. Even the child bride tradition lives on. I suppose Monica is lucky Clinton didn't die while in office. Otherwise, she might be buried at his 'Library'.

One of the most educating books I ever read was "Motel of the Mysteries". I made sure all my kids read it, and recommend it often.

Basically, its a picture book satire by David Mackaulay of future archeologists opening a site where a motel was, and the ridiculous assumptions they make of each item, such as the "Sacred Altar" which people would lie before for hours...

You know the “noble savage” stuff began before Jefferson penned the Declaration. Check out Rousseau.
