The was was going to be over by X-Mas. Of course they didn't realize it would be X-Mas 1918.

The Germans darn near knocked the French out of the war that year. They did a better job in 1940.

yep.

More of them.

Initiative.

it wasn't even the tactics. Although the Second World War was a different story.

It also helped that in 1940 they didn't have a massive Russian army simultaneously bearing down on them either.

...chain reaction...

no kidding. Amazing what the effect of one little bullet can have on the world. years of trenches full of mud, running accross fields and through barb wire while being gunned down. All because of one little bullet.

BTW, are you somewhat of a history fan/lover/officianado?

For a while I tried starting a daily "This day in history" thread, but after about a week of zero comments and 27 views I decided it wasn't a very popular idea.

The war was building for years. The whole continent was a powder keg ready to blow.

If I had to label myself I'd say I was a history nut case. My stupid college didn't offer it as a minor but I took as many history courses as I could. My main passions are the American Revolution, the Civil War, and WWII but I love all history in general.

yeah. going through all the secret alliances in Europe it's not hard to see that it was a war waiting to happen. In face, i bet there would have been a world war eventually even if there hadn't been the assassination. One disagreement over trade or something and people would have been up in arms.

"American Revolution, the Civil War, and WWII"

Yes. WWI is also interesting. I found ancient Greece quite interesting as well. BTW, can you ping me to these history threads whenever you post them?

I shall. I usually go to historychannel.com and use their this day in history page to post stuff because it's convenient.

World War I gets ignored too much in this country. Probably because we didn't get into it until the end.

We waited a while in WWII as well. Not until Pearl Harbor did we really get going, though we had been helping England out before that.

Americans were a bit frustrated that they had helped stop Germany in 1918 only to see them right back at it again twenty years later.

Imagine how it would have turned out had we stopped Hitler when he momved into the Rhineland...

We learned our lesson. People ask why we invaded Iraq even though Saddam hadn't nuked anyone or anything, well, look what happened when we treated Hitler that way.

Hitler couldn't sleep the night he ordered his troops into the Rhineland he was so nervous. They had orders to retreat immediately if the French made a move to stop them. They didn't and the rest is history.

Well he made some good political moves early on but he made enough mistakes later on that cost him everything.

Such as overriding his generals on D-Day and not letting them send in the panzers.
