As the US turns its Back on Western Classics, China Embraces Them
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | February 23, 2022 | John Mac Ghlionn

In 2019, the Society for Classical Studies, a non-profit North American scholarly organization devoted to all aspects of Greek and Roman civilization, held a rather memorable conference in San Diego. Titled “The Future of Classics,” panelists were asked for their opinions on “the diminution of our future role” in society. One of the panelists, Dan-el Padilla Peralta, an associate professor of classics at Princeton who researches and teaches the Roman Republic and early Empire, wasted no time in making his point, calling for all Classics to die “as swiftly as possible.” Peralta, a black academic, criticized Classics for their failure to represent non-whites, a criticism he still voices to this day. In May of 2021, Princeton caved into Peralta’s demands, and agreed to remove Greek and Latin course requirements for classics students in an effort to combat institutional racism.

As authors at The New Criterion noted: “Woke academics like Padilla want to cancel all that. All classics scholars, he has insisted, have a ‘responsibility . . . to race the discipline.’ Martin Luther King, Jr., taught that what matters is not the color of your skin but the content of your character. Padilla joins with the Black Lives Matter crowd in reversing that dictum.” As more US institutes of merit continue to self-flagellate and cancel the Classics, other countries start to embrace them. One of those countries happens to be China.

In a recent, truly eye-opening piece for SupChina, writer Chang Che outlines the many ways in which Chinese students are falling in love with the Classics. As Che notes, “China looks like an improbable place to find ‘new perspectives’ in the Classics.” However, “in the past few decades, its universities have grown into bastions of curiosity about the West and its traditions.”

I’ve read many of the classics, but almost zero were assigned in my public education. High school graduate of early 90’s.

US Colleges bending over backwards to the demands of a minority are graduating students for Watter’s World or what was Jay Leno’s Jay Walking.

The woke cultural revolution is an anti-intellectual movement. They have to destroy wisdom and critical thinking so they can have an army of ignorant slaves.

Communist revolutionaries such as this idiotic ‘professor” hate the classics because of the healthy moral education they provide. Plus, they teach one to actually think critically.

If they changed their requirements at the professors request only because he’s black, that’s not only racist, but it does not comply with MLK’s comments on character vs color.

Reasons to attend Ivy League schools has almost shrunk to a vanishing point when student of classical literature are denied learning Greek and Latin.

Looks like the trend of Chinese student s coming to America for education, will be replaced with American students going to China to learn the classics and many other BLM-ized disciplines as Americans sink into intellectual pygmies.

The University should have granted his request by firing him; why do they need a “Classics” Professor if they are dropping the subject?

Have been working off of four different "best 100 novels of all time" lists and knock off at least three a year.

Finished "Crime and Punishment" in January and nearly through Jane Eyre - this has been a ton of fun.

I met Padilla Peralta at a conference in 2017 and he seemed pleasant enough--I wasn't aware of his extremist views at the time. He was brought to the US as a child as an illegal immigrant.

Since nobody today learns Latin or Ancient Greek as their first language, how is requiring students to learn Latin and Greek biased in favor of one race over another?

The Society for Classical Studies is a new name for an old organization--it was founded in the 19th century as the American Philological Association. It generally holds its annual convention together with the Archaeological Institute of America.

Add to that that these fools mostly lack the intellectual capacity to even understand these works. How can they be expected to teach something they cannot grasp themselves?

Easier to huff and puff and blow smokescreens in the hope no one notices their inferiority and fires their lazy asses.

The woke cultural revolution is an anti-intellectual movement.

Today's "intellectuals" have knowledge but NO wisdom.

INTELLECTUAL (in-til-EK-chu-al)- An individual educated beyond his intelligence, who being unwilling or unable to create or provide any product or service of value to others, pontificates and expects to be paid for it, usually from public funds.

INTELLECTUAL (See also ACADEMIC)

ACADEMIC (ak-uh-DEM-ik): An individual educated beyond his intelligence who is unwilling or unable to create or provide anything of value to others, who while hiding out in a think-tank, college or university pontificates and expects to be paid for it, usually from public funds.
