A new book by Columbia sociology professor Alondra Nelson says that using DNA technology to find their African roots is becoming increasingly popular among Black people. In an interview with NPR, Nelson estimates that about 1 million have taken the test so far. The tests have also been popularized through Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates' show Finding Your Roots, which traces the family history of famous Americans such as Oprah and Chris Rock.
Nelson told NPR that discovering their genetic roots was a way for Black people to fill in a missing part of their history.
"Part of what I learned in the course of doing the research is that I am an outlier in this regard. Many of the people I spoke to - whether they were 25 or 65, had lived their whole lives wanting to know where in Africa their ancestors were from," said Nelson, author of The Social Life Of DNA.
Finding out what African ethnic group they are related to has a profound effect on Black people who take the test. Some break into tears, others have a new sense of identity now they know what ethnic group they come from. Actor Isaiah Washington used DNA technology to trace his maternal line back to the Mende people of Sierra Leone. He was so moved by the discovery that he is now a dual citizen of Sierra Leone and American and also contributed $1 million to a foundation that is building a school in the country....

NatGeo has spent the last 20 years tracing mankinds ancestors back to the “scientific Adam and Eve” using human DNA samples from worldwide populations. Every human alive on the planet today has DNA that can be traced back to a scientific Adam and Eve who lived in east Africa about 100,000 years ago. I sent them a cheek swab and can now see how my ancestors migrated from Africa to what is now Germany. I am going to get in line for my reperations. Thanks for posting the article.
OMG! Reparations to decedents who had relatives as slaves? Wow, that means just about everyone. It should be reparations for all of us, dating back to 3000 BC. Make everyone happy, free reparations for all. Anyone who owned a slave should pay up now.

No reparations without re-Patriation. You want the money “just because”— well then, go back where you are “from” so to speak. NO? Why not— aren’t you asking to be compensated for having ancestors taken from there and now you haven’t grown up where they were from?
Because they are black they think or call themselves African when they are not.

They should submit their first demand for reparations to the tribal chief who sold their ancestors. Then they should submit their demand to the Arab slave traders who bought them from the African chiefs.
First things first.
if they were here without a trace to Africa, will they get to pay the Native Americans?
if they are here without a legal birth certificate, can they be president?
#1 is the trick question.
Their reparations are now living in a free country, having an air conditioned roof over their head, food to eat, the internet, television, cell phones, a car, section 8, food stamps, medicaid, earned income cedit checks, and an opportunity to reach the American dream if they apply themselves. Nothing more.
Are mooslims going to pay-up, too? What about the Egyptians?
We already paid reparations with a huge segment of our population killed in the War Between the States and the land that was given freed slaves afterwards.
How would they even determine this? Do northerners have to pay? What about descendants of northerners who owned slaves? What about descendants of southerners who didn’t own slaves? What about the descendants of slave owners who freed their slaves?
What about descendants of whites who emigrated to the USA long after slavery was abolished? What about the years of welfare and other payments that have been distributed since Johnson was President?
What about descendants of blacks who emigrated to this country after slavery was abolished?
Well, Detroit does come to mind
Lyndon Johnson gave them plenty of reparations already.
Why is DNA testing necessary to prove blacks came from Africa?
Now, that would be interesting. If it's from East Africa, then his father is Obama. West Africa, then Frank Marshall Davis. Something else?, only the CIA knows for sure.
Most African slaves were captured by rival African tribes or kingdoms, and then sold to NORTHERN slave traders from Rhode Island or Massachusetts. They were then transported to the British West Indies (e.g., Jamaica), where most of them were made to work on sugar plantations owned by the slave traders.
A fraction of the captured slaves were transported to ports such as Charleston, where they were further traded to Southern plantations. Some even became slaves in such places as Rhode Island and New York.

If American blacks want “reparations”, where should the payments come from? U.S. whites? The British West Indies? Or African countries that are run by the descendants of the tribes that originally captured their ancestors? Or should U.S. blacks count themselves lucky, because they are much better off than their West African counterparts?
The whole “reparations” meme quickly dissolves into the ridiculous!!!!
Not to mention the descendants of the Romans that slaughtered many of my forefathers' Celtic buddies.
In fact, the vast majority of African slaves went to South America and the Caribbean. If I remember correctly, less than 10% made it to the U.S.
