The discovery of water on the surface of Mars, which just happened to coincide with the premiere of the hit film The Martian, starring Matt Damon as an astronaut marooned on the Red Planet, has caused some degree of excitement for space enthusiasts. NASA is particularly inspired because its central organizing project is the journey to Mars which is scheduled to put astronauts on the Martian surface by the 2030s. The discovery and the movie certainly would not hurt the effort to gin up support for the humans to Mars program.

Moon or Mars makes no difference as long as keep looking to Washington to make it happen.
The best Washington can do to make it happen - is stay out of the way of those really trying to get there, rather than feather their own nests with taxpayer $$.
“Is that the Earth behind him and in his visor at the same time? “
I agree...but I have been to a few of the ‘so-called’ Space Shuttle launches. They sure put on a good show - GREAT fireworks, but I’m no dummy - I know they came down near the middle of the Atlantic, just as everyone was driving home, believing NASA that they had made it to orbit, like TOTAL IDIOTS.
Thankfully they didn’t fool me!

They got that right!
“Listen to a Shuttle “glide” to a landing...”
I KNEW IT! What you;’re hearing is that big plane that carries the Shuttle so that it be dropped off up there and people think it’s returning from space.
I guess they can’t get everything right!
Again, no one is mentioning the whole point of NASA’s announcement - it was not that water exists on Mars - something which has been suspected for years, but how that water was lost. Something hit Mars, something very big, stripping off the atmosphere and dissipating the water. One side of Mars is heavily cratered, the other nearly flat - the line between the two hemispheres is very obvious.
No one wants to talk about this announcement as it contradicts the steady state, gradual, evolutionary model of traditional science. Nothing is permitted to introduce Catastrophism, no matter how compelling and obvious the evidence.
