Can We Run Our Cars on Natural Gas?

In an attempt to insulate the U.S. from dependence on foreign oil, many have advocated that we transition our vehicles from oil derived gasoline to natural gas. One North Texas couple invested in this plan, and Bob Farris and Carole Hornsby Haynes, PhD, share their experience. While natural gas is a great fuel for fleet vehicles and large trucks or buses, it faces many challenges in the rest of the commercial fleet.

Eustace runs his old truck with an on-board wood burning stove that converts to run the truck motor - works for what he wants it to - hauling lumber from his land for sale.....

It’s my understanding that Honda suspended manufacture of the CNG option Civics due to the drop in the cost of gasoline. The lowered cost difference between the two fuels made it no longer as attractive to sell.

Two years ago, I was seriously researching a CNG conversion for a car, preferably a Ford Taurus. I eventually determined it wasn’t cost effective and bought a regular Toyota Corolla that gets 34.5 mpg, a significant improvement over the SUV I was using.

Thats the secret - homes piped for gas are filling stations so many victories if that practice became wide spread. Just make sure a professional installs the converter.

Water is one part hydrogen and two parts oxygen. Separate the hydrogen and you got yourself some powerful fuel.

“I knew a guy in Tx, who ran his pickup on propane, back in the 70s. As far as I know, he didn’t have any problems with it, but only as far as I knew. “

It used to crater the valve seats after a while on engines designed to run on leaded fuels.

The propane delivery trucks used to run on it years ago as many tank trucks were gasoline powered allowing conversion. Now they seem to be all diesels.

Yep, you need to install a compressor unit to refuel the car.

Had a cousin, who in the sixties, worked for an oil company who had so much natural gas, they gave it to their employees to use as fuel in their vehicles. Cousin would go to the company site and fuel up. Worked very well, but had issues with acceleration. He had a switch where he could change from gasoline to natural gas. If he wanted to pass, he would switch fuels and then back again. Maybe with modern technology...

What efficiency issues with Nat Gas engines? Do you have a link for that claim?

What I’d like to know is if anyone has any real life experience of running a vehicle on NH3(ammonia). This is an idea that is well past due but now seems to be gaining some traction.... http://nh3fuelassociation.org/

Natural gas is a very economic alternative to gasoline. Considering the price historically is about 33 % of the cost of gasoline for = BTU. Costs are based on free market commodity prices of both.

If you fill up at a compressed natural gas supplier you will pay a premium as you are paying for infrastructure of the supplier and profit. In todays market which is an aberration natural gas is not very competitive due to low oil prices. However, the technology for engines that will run on both natural gas and gasoline is very old and very proved.

I would gladly pay for a vehicle that could run on both and compress the natural gas at my home with compressors that you can buy today. The cost of natural gas delivered to your home is exceptionally low and a bargain.

Due to limits of size for the tanks required your range would be limited to 150 to 200 miles on natural gas. This would take care of more than 90% of your travel. If you are going long distance, you fill up with gasoline when you are empty of natural gas.

I think CNG as a mix with regular gasoline is a better option (injected and mixed in the cylinder), CNG doesn’t have the energy density needed.

CNG injected in diesel trucks is already done for performance.

I remember years ago the old JC Whitney auto parts catalog selling a bolt on adapter to convert your carburated car to run on LP gas. One old guy in my home town bought one and drove his pick up truck for years on LP power.

Lower energy per unit volume of fuel is not a measurement of efficiency.

Natural Gas engines can be more efficient depending how it is set up.

Efficiency is a measurement of energy in to energy (work) out.

>> “Natural gas burns much more cleanly than oil—power plants that burn oil emit 50 percent more carbon dioxide than natural gas ones.” <<

This is just more death culture propaganda!

Carbon Dioxide is a 100% beneficial gas upon which all life depends .

I think work per unit is a good way to measure efficiency. What is more efficient, 9 units of work per gram or 10 units of work per gram?
