“Jihad Jane case suggests rising threat from online ‘jihobbyists’”

SNIPPET: “’Jihobbyists’ are people drawn to the online theater of violent jihad, becoming increasingly radical as they delve deeper into Web forums. Colleen LaRose, also known as ‘Jihad Jane,’ is an example of this threat, according to counterterrorism experts.”
SNIPPET: “But “jihobbyism stops when you cross over that line from thought to action,” Brachman said. “[W]hen they start stepping toward making something violent happen – including when you knowingly fund a terrorist organization – that crosses the line from jihobbyism to material support for terrorism.”
Aaron Weisburd of the Society for Internet Research, which monitors online Islamic extremism, said, “The problem is that the term jihobbyist conveys the notion that these guys are not serious ....”
“In fact what these guys are doing,” he wrote on his blog, “is marking time while waiting for the opportunities and associations to appear that will allow them to become real jihadis.””

US Concerned about Lone Wolf Terrorists, Compact Explosives

The attempted bombing of a U.S. commercial jetliner last Christmas highlights the growing danger of terrorists using home-made and compact explosive devices in attacks, a senior Pentagon official told Congress last week.

‘The one that probably keeps me awake most is Lashkar-e-Taiba in South Asia, which, of course, was responsible for the Mumbai bombings,’ he said.
‘We need to build even greater concern and greater programming to target this group, because its target set looked very much like an Al Qaida target set,’ he said. ‘And if it decides that it wants to wage the global terrorist effort, then that will be a real challenge for us. It has a lot more men under arms than Al Qaida has.’
Army Lt. Gen. Francis Kearney, deputy commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, said that decentralization of terrorists and their ability to mobilize without being detected are his main worries.
‘Our success in eliminating leaders in these organizations and their ability to communicate, which are two targeting lines in countering the extremist networks, have caused them to leap to operating on their own accord inside the intent of the Al Qaida message,’ Kearny said. ‘And so that means you can’t see that.’
Terrorists are becoming more agile and no longer need approval from senior leaders, Kearny said.
That danger plus the ability to sneak into the United States and use information to learn security weaknesses is a major worry, Kearny said

Navy Warns Ships of al-Qaeda Threat near Yemen

The Navy is warning ships sailing in waters near Yemen that al Qaeda is planning seaborne attacks similar to the 2000 suicide boat bombing of the USS Cole.
A warning notice posted on the Web site of the Office of Naval Intelligence and dated March 10 stated that the alert was issued to promote security for shipping companies and other vessels transiting the piracy-plagued region.
‘Information suggests that al Qaeda remains interested in maritime attacks in the Bab-al-Mandeb Strait, Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden along the coast of Yemen,’ the special advisory notice stated.

Military prosecutors suspected Slahi of links to other Al Qaeda operations, and considered seeking the death penalty against him while preparing possible charges in 2003 and 2004.”
