I just wonder if he would have been offered the position if he had won the election. It seemed to me it was a "consolation" prize.

I love the fact that our ships are flying that flag.

Thank you for that picture . I have done some research on the Bon Homme. I truly wish I had known in 1992 that she was going to be scrapped. Pieces of the landing deck were sold with the logo of the Bon Homme along with it's commissioning date. He does have a beautiful picture of her and the other two ships he proudly served on, but it would have given my father great joy to have had a part of her.

I was just back at the Academy last month with a granddaughter who is aspiring to go there. We visited the crypt, and the honor guards were Firsties and Segundos in full dress. We were told that on weekends, it is now midshipmen who serve as honor guards. (My husband was in the Class of '56.)

"...seemed to me it was a "consolation" prize."

You very well could be right, my FRiend. If you consider what happened with Ashcroft giving up his seat to Carnahan without a fight and then the whole Jumpin'Jim Jeffords debacle, you can actually make a pretty strong case that the GOP and Dubyuh werewilling to forfeit the Senate fer a coupla years so as to improve our chances in the 2002 election. Think about it...a 50-50 Senate with a Cheney tiebreaker and a bunch of RINO troublemakers like McStain ain't much of a majority, but the Vast Leftwing Medyuh Whore'd wouldda spun it as Dubyuh being unable to marshall his majority in both houses to pass needed legislation. However, by dropping the Missouri seat--for two years only--and allowing the ultraLib'ral Jeffords to become a RAT, it gave the GOP a Senator D'asshole to run against in 2002 and set US up fer a huge win in 2004 (with the RATS defending many more seats than the GOP and Dubyuh's coattails leading the way)!!

I know we're s'posed to be the STOOOOPID Party, but in hindsight, that was almost Sun Tzu-ian in its wisdom!!

SAM, where's Anti-Jen today? Having asked that, excellent post. Being interested in the Revolution, I was looking forward to a thread about John Paul Jones and you delivered nicely.

If you want on or off the Western Civilization Military History ping list, let me know.

Hi Sparta.

Jen's running around back and forth between Alabama and Georgia. She should be back this evening.

Gentlemen, I see we have an impromptu Ashcroft bashing-thread going. I want to get in on the fun. If Ashcroft doesn't grow some testicles and start investigating Clinton's crimes, Dubya's reelection truly is at stake(unless the Rats run a complete moron). Many voted for Bush because they thought he was going to after Clinton, if he doesn't deliver, those people will stay home the next time around.

I'm not one of those that voted for Bush because I thought he's go after the Clintons. I'm not impressed with Ashcroft as AG though, I just don't think he tough enough.

Ashcroft has been horrible on civil liberties and he's been a wimp on fighting terrorists and corruption. He's a sanctimonius little man who needs to be replaced at the first opportunity. I think a requirement for attorney general should be they recognize that the terrorists on 9/11 were Muslim, not the ordinary American.

(He made up for some of his failings by declaring the Second Amendment an individual right, though.)

Hey SAMWolf, so I guess that it is true, "that the good die young". I just got home from work a little while ago. I hope your day went well.

Seeing those pictures reminds me of being glad that I didn't marry until I was out of the Navy. I saw many other sailors have to say good bye to their loved one's on several different deployments. Leaving was much harder for them than it was for me. As a matter of fact, I kind of liked going over seas.

I'm getting by. It didn't start well and getting back into the "work" mindset is tough. How'd it go for you today?
